Our Story

In 1988, the landscape for dance in Ontario was dramatically different. The digital tools we take for granted today were nonexistent. Securing funding was a complex, often daunting process. Recognizing this challenging environment, Susan Cohen at the Ontario Arts Council (OAC), with the support of the Toronto Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts, spearheaded the creation of Dance Umbrella of Ontario (DUO). The initiative arose from a shared vision: to provide much-needed support to dance professionals, enabling them to thrive and contribute to the vibrant dance community.

Founded as a non-profit, non-membership organization, DUO immediately began offering essential services: financial management, grant writing assistance, and administrative support. These core services proved invaluable to countless dance artists and companies, allowing them to focus on their creative work. As the organization grew, so did the scope of services. DUO expanded to include marketing support, production assistance, and strategic business consultation—a response to the evolving needs of the sector.

Today, DUO offers comprehensive services that encompass not only traditional administrative support but also strategic guidance on business development, marketing, and tour management.  Our work in supporting the development of key initiatives underscores our commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive dance ecosystem.  We are proud of our legacy of empowering artists and building a more equitable future for dance in Ontario, and we remain committed to evolving our approach to best serve the dance community.

DUO has a history of mentoring next-generation Arts Administrators, Producers, and Managers in the dance sector. Since 2016 we have continued to hire Indigenous trainees through Miziwe Biik The Indigenous Employment and Training Program. Two of these interns were hired full-time after completing their one-year training program. DUO recognizes the need for Indigenous Arts Administrators, Producers, Coordinators, and Managers in dance to build capacity in this underserved sector. We foresee continuing this initiative to provide quality training and job opportunities to Indigenous individuals interested in dance.
