What Publicity Materials Do I Need?

Promotional tools must attract the public to your event. They can be photocopied flyers, black and white or colour postcards, brochures, posters or even business cards depending on your budget. They should contain the following info:
  • Title of piece, name of choreographer (and collaborators), location (full address), dates and times, ticket prices, box office number and funders' credits/logos.
  • You may want to use additional text to attract the public, such as a critic's quotation (keep it short and credit the reviewer/newspaper), a quotation from literature or poetry, or your own words.
  • Use an interesting image that attracts attention.
  • Don't use so much text that it overwhelms your image. The most important text should be large enough that it stands out.
You can distribute flyers by mail, stuffing programmes or handing them out in the line-ups of dance, music and theatre productions. Pass them out to friends, and approach store and restaurant managers and obtain permission to place flyers on their counters.

TIPS!
  • If you are concerned about your budget, posters can be omitted. They will not make or break your event.
  • To keep costs down, posters can be photocopied onto 11 x 17 sheets of paper. Add colour with markers, paint, or stickers. Use your imagination.
  • Promotional materials should be distributed two to three weeks in advance of your event.
