Do I Need To Network?

If a dancer dances in a forest...does anybody see it? Making yourself known, getting your work seen. It has to be done! How do you do it?

The words "networking" and "schmoozing" conjure up images of Armani-suited business folk rapid-firing business cards at each other, drinking cheap champagne and laughing inanely at a presenter's jokes, or running up the credit card wining and dining your way to a gig. Reality is much simpler...and cheaper!

TIPS!
  • Read programme notes, figure out who the presenters are.
  • Go to opening nights; introduce yourself to the people you want to meet.
  • Submit your work to local curated and non-curated series and venues.
  • Perform at other artists' fundraising events (remember, even if you don't get paid -- it looks good on your resume!).
  • Ask for advice. (People love to use their expertise and feel like they are contributing to the development of your career.).
  • Tell people what you are doing; invite them to see your work.
  • Join service organizations/associations.
  • Get on organizations' mailing lists.
  • Subscribe to dance journals; find out what's happening in your profession!
And yes, on occasion drink the cheap sponsor wine and look deeply interested in your host's story...
