How Do I Develop A Business Plan?

Once you have established your artistic vision that defines the artistic landscape of your organization, a strategic planning process should follow.

A strategic plan lays out how to achieve your vision by defining a logical flow of objectives, strategies and tactics that direct and measure your business' work efforts. This includes an analysis of your organization's strengths and weaknesses as well as the threats that prevent you from achieving your vision. You will also evaluate the various opportunities that will assist and contribute to the successful realization of your vision. This analysis must consider both the internal and external landscapes.

Strategic planning itself is not a complex idea but sometimes the process can be a little mind-bending. If your organization has a board, you should seriously consider hiring a professional facilitator for your planning session to take you through the steps. If you are an individual wishing to undertake the process, visiting an arts manager at a service organization like DUO is invaluable. For more information, visit the Free Management Library for For-Profit and Nonprofit Organizations.

If you are trying to secure a bank loan or private investment for your operation, you will be required to present a Business Plan. This document is not your strategic plan, which is essentially an internal document. A Business Plan is a document suitable to present to other people/organizations such as a bank, outlining what business you are in, your market, competition, sales strategy, financing, management controls and so on. If you need to prepare a formal business plan, visit Canada Business Service Centre.
