RE-EDUCATION OF THE BODY – Klein/Mahler Technique
This intensive workshop is based on a dance/movement technique that provides the underpinnings to support all styles of dance technique and improvisation. The purpose of the work/class is to re-educate one's body with an interweaving of theory and practice on a physical and organic level. The result is clarity and sureness of movement, and a new level of understanding the innate intelligence of the body. A body of work, it is also a way for dancers to be treated, respected, and to be seen as individuals. The class is open to all levels, dancers and non-dancers alike.
BARBARA MAHLER has taught daily classes for 27 years plus, educating and teaching (with, and inspired by, Susan Klein) a generation of dancers. She is a widely respected dance teacher
and choreographer, very active in the development contemporary dance technique. Essentially self-taught, she brings to her classes the perspective, understanding and experience of working
on her own movement re-education. Barbara was a Movement Research artist in residence for the 2000-01 season, is for the 2006-08 season, is an adjunct faculty at Hunter College, NYC, and is on the artist advisory board of BAX, and a recent MFA graduate at from UWM. Barbara also maintains a private practice in Zero Balancing and other hands on healing modalities.
KLIEN/MAHLER TECHNIQUE
The main thrust of the work is for dancers to find their own essence, their own identity and integrity and take that into movement. In order to do that we work at the level of the bone,
not the traditional level of the muscles. Klein Technique is not a release technique in that our goal is not to release, but to move. In order to move most efficiently it is necessary to
release or let go of the muscles that hold us back from moving and fix the body into a set and locked configuration. We aim at releasing the muscles so we can get down to the deepest tissue, the bone, where we can learn to move from the true essence of our individual nature. When the bones are aligned we become connected, we become powerful and strong. The body becomes efficient and alive, and injuries often heal. We align the bones by using the muscles most responsible for the transfer of forces through the body - the psoas, the hamstrings, the external rotators, and the pelvic floor. We do not work to “exercise” these muscle but rather to “wake them up”; to use them for support for and realignment of the bones. We work, and teach, for the body to be elastic, responsive, open to choices, and expressive. Movement, and the treatment of each individual student’s body, mind and spirit with kindness, respect and generosity is our ultimate goal. And finally and most importantly, the body does not exist alone but in connection to the ground, the space, and to others.
“Mahler, a noted teacher, views dance training as a voyage of self-discovery. Barbara Mahler roots her choreography in distillation, as if she aims to extract the essence of her ideas, making them calmer and purer.” (Village Voice 2007)

Concise History of the Companies
MOonhORsE dance theatre
Incorporated as a not-for-profit charitable organization in 1996, MOonhORsE dance theatre was established for the pursuit of Claudia Moore’s artistic journey: her evolution as a creator and interpreter. Activities include creation of dancetheatre works, collaborations and commissions from Claudia’s most respected colleagues. MOonhORsE produces two series that are integral to the dance community. Older & Reckless is an informal performance series that will present its 14th program in February 2008. This series features work from OLDER artists who continue to grow more RECKLESS as time goes by, providing an opportunity for seasoned dance artists to perform short works and a chance for the audience to see some of Toronto’s and Canada’s most celebrated senior choreographers. Poetry in Space began in 1999 and will present its 10th workshop in April 2008. This workshop series is for professional and pre-professional dance artists to deepen performance skills and explore their creative potentials. Poetry in Space provides a platform for dance and theatre professionals to share their knowledge through intensive work with Toronto’s and Ontario’s artists.
Works from MOonhORsE’s repertoire have been presented by Danceworks Mainstage, Hysteria Festival, Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival, Peterborough New Dance, Montreal’s Tangente, and Vancouver’s Dancing on the Edge Festival. MOonhORsE has presented works in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Buffalo, New York.
COBA Collective of Black Artists
COBA’s mission is to preserve and promote the finest traditions of African, Caribbean and contemporary dance and music through research, education and performance. COBA has carved itself a niche in the Toronto dance community through its annual African History Month school-touring programs and student matinees, at the same time developing a highly spirited repertoire of traditional African, Caribbean and contemporary works for main stage audiences.
COBA has made a significant contribution to Canadian dance ideology through the development and teaching of A-Feeree, the physical language. Based on artistic co-founder BaKari E. Lindsay’s ethnographic research, and taught exclusively at COBA’s performing arts school in Toronto, A-Feeree is a training method that assists dancers in navigating the physical aesthetics of African and African Diasporic dances.
Saraca: Dances for the Soul (1994) was COBA’s inaugural season and the Collective has to-date presented 14 main stage seasons. 25+ works have been created among Collective members BaKari E. Lindsay, Charmaine Headley and Julia Morris. COBA has commissioned 5 works from world-renowned Africanist choreographers including Senegalese Griot Alassane Sarr, Jeanguy Saintus and internationally acclaimed soloist Vincent Sekwati Koko Mantsoe. The company has toured Ontario, the United States, and Trinidad and Tobago with an overwhelming response, garnering critical acclaim for its pure and authentic presentation of traditional African and Caribbean dance. Works like Distant Voices (1994) and Primal Fête (1999) have been hailed as ‘a new canadianas’ (Paula Citron) in contemporary dance for their movement innovation. With the vision to present the finest traditions in dance and music while preserving the cultural traditions of Africa and the African Diaspora, COBA has positioned itself as a performance collective that researches, creates and produces Africanist dance culture that educates and entertains.
Korean Dance Studies Society of Canada
The Korean Dance Studies Society of Canada (KDSSC) operates primarily to promote Korean traditional dance and music throughout Canada for both native-born Koreans, as well as for all other Canadians in order to enrich Canada’s culture, multiculturalism and community. The Mi Young Kim Dance Company (MYKDC), founded in 1987 as a not-for-profit corporation under the umbrella of the KDSSC, invokes awareness of Korean traditional dance and promotes a unique consciousness through the means of creating and performing dynamic and new Korean traditional dance. MYKDC is currently recognized for its high artistic merit and a proven track record of enriching community culture. MYKDC has a reserved space in many regular annual performances such as Dance Ontario DanceWeekend, Caravan (Korea - Seoul Pavillion), Toronto Street Festival, CanAsian Dance Festival, Korean Grand Gala, and Chinese New Year Celebration. MYKDC has received recognition and numerous awards for its cultural contributions and achievements, including an Award of Merit as the Entertainment Award Winner (2001) and the Korean-Canadian Heritage Award (1998) presented by the Korean-Canadian community. MYKDC continuously gives workshops and provides training and instruction in Korean traditional dance and music to groups of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.
The KDSSC produces the SooRyu Dance Festival bi-annually. SooRyu enriches Canadian society through the promotion, organization and staging of culturally diverse traditional and contemporary dance forms. In alternate years the KDSSC presents a program of traditional and contemporary Korean works produced by the MYKDC.
