Jasmyn Fyffe creates new work for IMPULSE opening November 23rd at The Winchester St Theatre

It’s a great article about Jasmyn and her career. It also looks like IMPUSE is going to be a great show.

DANCEWORKS celebrates its 40th this weekend at HARBOURFRONT

Last night, DanceWorks, Toronto’s acclaimed and longest running contemporary dance series, opened  its 40th Anniversary Celebration, a stellar evening of world premieres and past favourites. The house was packed, the show rocked, and the closing number by Denise Fujiwara had the house on its feet with its hands in the air.  Kudos to Mimi Beck and company for serving up a great start to a weekend that both celebrates and reflects the vibrant history of independent contemporary dance in this city.

Featured artists in this unique evening include choreographers/performers Esmeralda Enrique and Joanna de Souza who collaborate on the world premiere of Amalgam; choreographer Denise Fujiwara with the world premiere of Moving Parts; choreographer/performer Learie McNicolls with two works; remounts of The Night Journey and excerpts from Dancing With The Ghost; and choreographer Holly Small with composer Robert W. Stevenson with a re-imagining of Cheap Sunglasses.

Mimi Beck, curator of DanceWorks, said: “DanceWorks began at the Music Gallery in 1977. We’ve had 222 numbered performances since then. True to its early roots, the 40th anniversary edition – DW 223 – features music, dance and performance by five seasoned choreographers, all of whom were presented in previous seasons. These pieces are a sampling of themes from different decades of DanceWorks, drawn from 1981 to today.”

DanceWorks began as a collective of independent dance artists in 1977 and has grown to become Toronto’s leading presenter of independent dance. DanceWorks offers seasons of eclectic, exhilarating choreography programmed to intrigue, challenge and enthrall.

House Guests – TRAILER from CORPUS on Vimeo.

Next week, CORPUS opens what promises to be one of the most innovative dance performances on offer this season.

CORPUS describes their latest creation, HOUSE GUESTS like this:

Around the corner from Dundas and Ossington.
A typical Toronto house with rust-coloured bricks.
A red door. Number 8.
And from the ground floor to the attic, welcoming gazes through the window panes.
An invitation.
To an enchanting evening in the company of flamboyant characters.
All three floors vibrate to the dancers’ movements.
The creaking of the wooden staircases.
Subdued lighting.
A sound atmosphere with a Spanish touch.
A brazen spirit on a fridge.
Albanian customs.
A cleaning paranoid…

An intimate experience in the private home of CORPUS‘ Artistic Director from Nov 21st to Dec 17th.
Close to 200 tickets already sold. Sold-out Premiere.
Wait no more.

TRIPTYQUE wows audiences at Canadian Stage

Gravity-defying athleticism, the lyricism of contemporary dance and the poetics of the imagination come together in this virtuosic triple bill from Quebec circus superstars The 7 Fingers (Cuisine & Confessions, Traces). For the first time, the innovative troupe joins forces with three internationally-renowned choreographers, weaving together a magical journey between circus and dance.

Triptyque, Québec’s Les 7 doigts de la main, one of the world’s most innovative circus companies, fuses circus with dance, combining the talents of: Marie Chouinard, whose duet Anne et Samuel examines the relationship between gravity and the human body, Victor Quijada presenting the hand-balancing quintet Variations 9.81,  and  Marcus Morau lures the audience into the space between wake and sleep with the mesmerizing Nocturnes.

Circus and dance together:  sounds like a fabulous show!

“Absolutely magnificent.”  – CBC- Radio-Canada
