Dedicated Archivists -
Lawrence & Miriam Adams:

Carol Anderson

Dance Collection Danse is the only dance archives dedicated to Canadian dance history. Originated by Lawrence and Miriam Adams, both former members of the National Ballet of Canada, it embraces the wealth of Canada's dance legacy. In 1986 the Adams produced Encore! Encore!, a project which remounted and videotaped twelve notable choreographic works of the 1940s and 1950s -- by Nancy Lima Dent, Gweneth Lloyd, Jeanne Renaud, Françoise Sullivan, Nesta Toumine and Boris Volkoff. From this experience evolved the identity of Dance Collection Danse as a "living museum." Noted for their visionary initiatives, including 15 Dance Lab in the 1970s and the Arts Television Centre in the 1980s, more recently the Adams have identified themselves as cultural publishers, producing twenty-one titles since 1992. They also distribute a semi-annual periodical, The Dance Collection Danse Magazine. The Adams do all the design and layout of their books, paying meticulous attention to editorial detail. Their publications represent a scope of interests and expertise - examples include Rhonda Ryman's Dictionary of Classical Ballet Terms: Cecchetti; Felix Cherniavsky's study of Maud Allan, Maud Allan and Her Art; Grant Strate's China Journal; and Express Dance, soon to be published, a guide for public school teachers co-authored by drama educator Carol Oriold and artist/educators Allen and Karen Kaeja. The Encyclopedia of Theatre Dance in Canada/Encyclopédie de la Danse Théâtrale au Canada, to be published in 2000, will be a significant addition to dance literature in Canada.
