Newton Moraes Dance Theatre is a company dedicated to the creation, performance and production of contemporary dance works that explore and maintain the link between the artistic vision and knowledge of founder/artistic director of Brazilian and Latin American cultures and new forms of contemporary artistic expressions.
In 1997, Newton Moraes Moraes Dance Theatre was founded to explore Brazilian arts to its full, and to showcase Newton’s own artistic manifestation incorporating Brazilian culture, and others. The company has been performing in many of Toronto arts venues, including the Harbourfront Centre, Betty Oliphant Theatre, and Royal Ontario Museum, plus performances in Montreal, many cities in Germany: Aub, Augusburg, Bonn, Bielefeld, Dusseldorf, Postdam, Stuttgart, Wurzburg, and, in Brazil, Porto Alegre and São Paulo. The company has received support from The Toronto Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts, The Laidlaw Foundation, General Consulate of Brazil in Toronto, and the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs.
Newton Moraes is proud to be member of the board of Dance Ontario Dance Association and is also a member of the Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists (C.A.D.A) as well as a committee member of Harbourfront Centre for Summer Events. He is on the Faculty at the Ballet Creole School of Performing Arts in Toronto. Newton Moraes has performed in “Courts of Miracles” by David Earle and “Crazy to be Born” by Terril Miguare. Newton also collaborated with Ballet Creole in their 2003 production of “Orixas Voices” and in “Dancing Spirits” for Ballet Creole season at the Premiere Dance Theatre in April 2004.
Newton was also invited by the City Hall of Bogota (District Institute of Culture), Colombia to choreograph the piece “Love Games” through a three months residency. The piece was premiered at the Teatro Municipal Jorge Eliecer Gaitan n November 2005 and is planned to tour in Canada in 2006. In February 2005 Newton Moraes Dance heater premiered its last work “L’Amour en Silence” at the Harbourfront Centre Theatre.
