MOonhORsE Dance Theatre

OLDER & RECKLESS

OLDER & RECKLESS, an informal performance series, features work from OLDER artists who continue to grow more RECKLESS as time goes by. OLDER & RECKLESS provides an opportunity for seasoned dance artists to perform short works and a chance for the audience to see some of Canada’s most celebrated senior choreographers.

Conceived as a twice-yearly event by Claudia Moore, artistic director of MOonhORsE Dance Theatre, OLDER & RECKLESS is “an intimate exchange for both the performer and the observer; exciting, terrifying, and lots of fun. The performances are followed by a party with music, refreshments, and a chance to talk with the artists about work, process, and whatever else comes up!”

Current Repertoire

Ever Thus

Ever Thus is a new theatrical dance by Choreographer Claudia Moore, who takes anumber of Shakespeare's classic characters and underlines their familiar stories with striking contemporary choreography interwoven with selected soliloquies.
A traveling troupe of five performers on an endless tour interpret Shakespeare with movement and text - their roles and real lives having become irrevocably entwined.

On Earth
On Earth, an evening of four solos, draws upon the personal lives, loves and histories of the company members to create individual portraits of a contemporary band of gypsies. Exuberant and disturbing, these portraits resound with physical expression of the universal themes of family, art and survival. On Earth premiered in Toronto June 19 – 23, 2002 at the Theatre Centre, and has toured to Montreal and Vancouver.

Small Midnight
"Small Midnight is the name of a plant with clusters of tiny violet flowers that I added to my garden last summer. The name stuck with me, suggestive of the kind of late night magic that as a participant in a hectic life-style typical of my generation I rarely am able to savour. This work is like something you might have discovered in the attic, a box of eclectic moments, some dusty, some sparkly, to inspire whimsy, dreaming, or a flight of fancy..." - Artistic Director, Claudia Moore

This evening of extradinary solos and duets was co-choreographed by Moore and the masterful Tedd Robinson.
"[Small Midnight] is..a rare bloom… Moore's poetic imagination fuels the production…" Deidre Kelly, The Globe and Mail, Toronto

CASA

CASA is the portrait of a family –an outlaw, his mother and the daughter he never knew. Choreographed by Moore, CASA extends Moore’s theme of the small room – here it contains elements of a doomed existence, dangerous passions and undying hope. This trio is described as “butoh-esque Tennessee Williams” and was influenced by Peter Carey’s novel “True History of the Kelly Gang”

CASA features a trio of highly dramatic performances by Claudia Moore, Jennifer Dickand Miko Sobreira with environment by Jan Komerak and live music by Rainer Weins.

Mirrored, ritualistic movements unite the trio across time and space…Moore’s choreography has a lyrical quality that touches an emotional nerve…” – Jon Kaplan, NOW Magazine

by night

By Night is a dance theatre creation by Claudia Moore. The work features a group of otherworldly characters inspired by some of our favourite literary creatures including Nosferatu, The Snow Queen and Shakespeare's Caliban. A journey away from the esthetic of our daily lives into a place of unearthly delights, By Night is a celebration of the human imagination and the extraordinary ability of the body to conjure magic.

By Night features guest performer Kate Alton.
