Korean Dance Studies Society of Canada

The Korean Dance Studies Society of Canada (KDSSC) is a not-for-profit organization, founded by Mi Young Kim, who is the artistic director of the KDSSC in Toronto.

Founded in 1979 under the name of Mi Young Kim Korean Folk Dance Institute, the KDSSC was renamed in 1987. It is dedicated to educating and training young people in the rich heritage of Korean dance, and to spreading awareness of traditional Korean dance among the Canadian and International publics by staging dynamic performances.

KDSSC is the combination of the Mi Young Kim Dance Company and The School of Korean Dance and Drum. The Mi Young Kim Dance Company is a professional dance company, while the School of Korean Dance and Drum runs both a Youth Program and a Professional Training Program. Fifteen students are currently in the Pre-Professional Training Program, and they will be performing as professional dancers in the Mi Young Kim Dance Company after completing their training

Miyoung Kim was born in Seoul, Korea, and has been learning traditional Korean dance since the age of 6, from her father Yunhak Kim. Yunhak Kim had the distinction of being designated as a Korean National Cultural Treasure, and he helped transform traditional Korean dance to its present form for the professional stage. Miyoung Kim has won numerous first prizes in dance competitions in Korea and has performed extensively in Asia, Europe and North America.

Miyoung Kim has established herself as one of the leading figures in the Korean-Canadian Cultural Scene. She works as a dancer, choreographer, teacher and founded the Korean Dance Studies Society of Canada in 1979.

Miyoung Kim was awarded the chief Artist in Cultural Area by the Korea Times Daily in 1998, and the best award in Artistic Achievement by The Korea Central Daily in 1999. Miyoung Kim produced Shin Myung in 2000 and Celebrating Choom 50 Years in 2001. Recently, she has been focusing her attention on teaching young Canadians and creating new works which would open a new stage for multicultural Canadian dance history.
