Doors Open Toronto is a free weekend celebration that creates access to, heightens awareness of, and generates excitement about Toronto’s architecture, history and urban design. 150 of Toronto’s most historic and/or architecturally significant buildings, many not normally open to the public, open their doors for tours and/or special programs.

The 19th annual Doors Open Toronto presented by Great Gulf returns on Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27, 2018. The theme for the 2018 event is “Film” and will involve sites with a history of being locations for a variety of film and television shows, film studios, pre- and post-production houses, schools and training programs, film and video co-ops and other sites involved directly or indirectly with the Toronto film scene. We are looking for projects that will specifically tie in with this theme.

As part of the 2018 special programming we invite artists to submit proposals for projects that connect to the Doors Open Toronto programming and reference the theme. We encourage artists from across disciplines to apply. Proposals should be for projects up to a maximum of $3,000.

PROPOSAL GUIDELINES

The deadline to submit proposals is Monday, October 23, 2017. Applications should adhere to the following guidelines:

  • 2 pages maximum
  • Include a description of the project and its concept
  • Include background information on the applicant—are you an organization, a collective or an individual?
  •  Include relevant documentation of past or present work (video, website, visuals)
  • Include budget breakdown with in-kind resources to be contributed by applicant
  • Connect to Doors Open programming themes
  •  Proposed locations of projects can be a site on the Doors Open building list or at City Hall. We will accept suggestions of new locations however, to be considered, the location will have to be assessed by the City of Toronto and commit to be open 10-5pm for the two days of the Doors Open event.

AUDITION NOTICE: GARY ROWNTREE | DANCE

Gary Rowntree required four professional dancers for a new 1920’s style production that takes place this December at the Waterfront Hall, Belfast.

Where: Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK

The production requires 2 female & 2 male dancers. (Aged 18+) All dancers applying must:

· Have experience of working in a range of styles of dance,
· Be highly skilled and versatile,
· Have some partner work experience and

· Be available for a week of rehearsals at the end of November, and at least four performance dates in December. Dates TBC.

The rate of pay is £920. This is inclusive of rehearsals and Performances. If additional performances are required, then and additional fee will be paid.

The required profile:

Appearance: height – 175-180 cm

Skills: The candidate should ideally possess classical background with skills and experience in contemporary dance such as Graham technique, contact/partnering and solo improvisation as well as classical pas de deux. Any other contemporary ballet dance technique is a bonus.

The candidate should have a proven record of the contemporary techniques experience or taken workshops of the specified techniques.

Additional skills:

  • acting skills or talents are a bonus
  • ability to work both independently and within a team (essential)

Dance experience: 2-3 years (free-lance experience is preferred but not essential)

Our Rebel Yells series is an exciting program featuring artists creating work that is edgy, highly physical or unconventional.

 
If selected you will receive an honourarium of $500, a video of each performance, full technical staff and marketing as well as a fantastic opportunity to show your work and meet other artists! We offer a travel stipend for out of town artists. This opportunity is available to artists who, at minimum, have completed a professional training program or equivalent and professional choreographers as defined by The Canadian Artist Code.

  6. A video of the proposed work or a recent work or work-in-progress. You may send the video via Youtube link or vimeo (with password), or web link. *Please ensure your privacy settings are turned off where necessary.

Works of a minimum of 5min up to a maximum of 20min will be considered. You may propose an excerpt of a longer work, a remounted work, or a new piece. This series is meant to showcase finished works/well-developed pieces and NOT works-in-progress.

If the work you are proposing is not finished as of the application deadline, please show video excerpts of rehearsal footage of the work and clearly dictate with description and video your ideas/rough rehearsal footage to provide an indication as to how the work will be completed.

 
Curatorial Criteria


Dance Matters’ rotating curatorial committee makes its decisions by upholding the following criteria:

  • Works of clarity in form and idea
  • Works of strong artistic integrity
  • Works showcasing spirited performances
  • Works from artists who are not presented frequently in other platforms
  • Works from a range of artists – from emerging to senior
  • A range of solo, duet or group work
  • A range of dance aesthetics and viewpoints

Applications are now open for the Indigenous Culture Fund

Applications are now available for all three funding programs under the Indigenous Culture Fund (ICF). The ICF programs for individuals and organizations have been established to support First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities, culture and way of life.

ICF Small Grants

  • What this program supports: Short-term community, culture and way-of-life projects in Ontario with grants of up to $5,000.
  • Who can apply: Ontario-based Indigenous organizations, groups and individuals. First-time applicants, youth and Elders are all encouraged to apply.
  • Deadline: Applications accepted year-round.
  • Full details on this program.

ICF Project Grants for Individuals, Groups and Collectives

  • What this program supports: Larger community, culture and way-of-life projects in Ontario, with up to $30,000 for short-term projects and up to $60,000 for long-term projects.
  • Who can apply: Ontario-based Indigenous organizations, groups and individuals.
  • Deadline: November 1, 2017 at 1 p.m.

ICF Project Grants for Organizations

  • What this program supports: Large-scale projects undertaken by Indigenous organizations in Ontario, with up to $60,000 for short-term projects and up to $120,000 for long-term projects.
  • Who can apply: Ontario-based Indigenous organizations – including not-for profits, schools, service organizations, community centres, councils and more.
  • Deadline: November 1, 2017 at 1 p.m.

This fund is part of the Government of Ontario’s response to the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC). The OAC and Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport (MTCS) acknowledge and thank all of the survivors, their relations and the TRC.

ICF was created through a process of extensive outreach and collaboration with Indigenous communities across Ontario. ICF exists to support cultural priorities and activities as defined by Indigenous peoples and communities, including on and off-reserve, urban, rural and remote.

The goals of ICF programs are to:

  • Support the vitality and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis expression and ways of life.
  • Create opportunities for Indigenous people to continue community building.

The No Borders project aims to bridge encounters between dance, music, photography, film, conceptual arts, philosophy and spirituality to create an environment for free expression and creation through dance.
