MAYWORKS seeks submissions for the 2018 Festival

Mayworks Festival of Working People and the Arts is an annual multidisciplinary arts festival that celebrates working class cultures. As the longest-running labour arts festival in Canada, Mayworks continues to forge new links between artists and workers, encouraging art to inspire labour and labour to incite art.

In solidarity with shared struggles for decent wages and healthy working conditions, Mayworks 2017 centred on Art Against Precarity. For our 2018 Festival, as we celebrate the victories for workers secured by $15 and Fairness and Make It Fair campaigns, we anticipate the futures that could exist when labour and grassroots social movements work together for our collective liberation. We draw inspiration from the labour of movement building, not just as a political practice, but also a space for deep learning and radical experimentation.

Indebted to the work of revolutionary cultural movements including Afrofuturism and Indigenous Futurism, Mayworks welcomes submissions that take cues from our diverse histories to imagine the futures of work and culture from the perspectives of artists-as-workers and workers-as-artists.

For the 33rd Mayworks Festival taking place in May 2018, we invite submissions for art projects from all disciplines (visual art, film and video, digital media, music, dance, theatre, performance, and beyond) that travel in time, speculate and dream about what the future holds for workers.

Mayworks’ artistic vision commits to equitable programming that includes Indigenous people, Black people, people of colour, LGBTQ2 people, people with disabilities, and young people as audiences and artists. To that end, we highly encourage applicants from members of these equity-seeking groups.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2017
For questions/concerns about the submission process and/or form, email submissions@mayworks.ca

A fond farewell to Caroline Caire from DUO

Caroline in the heart of the DUO staff.

It’s with a catch in our  voices and a little tear in our eyes that we say good-bye to our colleague and friend, Caroline Caire today.

Caroline started at DUO on a three-month contract helping produce Dusk Dances. It quickly became apparent that she had great skills as a producer and was invited to join the team on permanent staff, where she has been for the past 2 years.

In her role as the Producing and Administrative Manager at DUO, Caroline’s services have been an invaluable asset to many of DUO’s clients. She has worked especially closely with Sylvie Bouchard on both Dusk Dances and  BoucharDanse. The growth of Dusk Dances in recent years is, in no small part, due to Caroline’s talent and efforts.

Caroline hails from France, and she and her husband are hoping to spend more time in Europe in the near future. As well, Caroline is setting off on a new professional adventure, training as a teacher of French as a second language (FSL) in the new year.

Thanks for everything Caroline!  DUO wishes you every success and happiness with your future endeavours.

Dancemakers offers two calls to artists: deadlines are December 15th & January 15th

Our friends and colleagues at Dancemakers have asked us to share two calls to artists they currently have on offer:  check them out!

First up is a call to artists for the second-ever Dancemakers’ Winter Residency , granting a week of space in either the Baker or the Theatre. This residency, the “Plug and Play”  is bare-bones and a great opportunity for some January rejuvenation. Is your new years’ resolution to make more dances?  Spend more time in the studio?  Roll around more?  This could be for you!

Next up is the call to artists for the Emerging Artist in Residence for 2018-2020. This exciting program is targeted at artists in their first few years of a choreographic practice, but with some experience under their belts – previous Emerging Artists in Residence have been Amanda Acorn, who finishes her tenure in June of 2018, and Alicia Grant, in residence from 2014-2016.

Artists applying to this program can be mid-career or established dancers new to a choreographic practice, or any choreographers who have had a minimum of two professional presentations of their work. For clarification or assistance please don’t hesitate to reach out – and if you’re not sure if a presentation of your work constitutes as “professional”, rest assured that Dancemakers will consider pretty much anything that was not a school show (that murky term means so many things in so many contexts).

BJM – Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal – Free Masterclass for professional/advanced dancers

Afterwards, Kennedy will teach some choreographic moments of BJM’s active repertoire and Dance Me/Music of Leonard Cohen (which will be performed by BJM the following evening at the Sony Centre). This masterclass will be geared towards advanced/professional dancers. Prior dance experience is required.

RAYMOND WILL EAT DINNER TODAY and other notes I’ve found on the ground…by Susie Burpee at hub14 this weekend

For the past 15 years, Susie Burpee has collected notes she has found on the ground.  Love letters, grocery lists, thank you notes, F*CK You! notes, appeals for forgiveness, cries for help, x-rated stuff, school poetry…

With just a few details, paper and words becomes flesh and soul.   The collection seems to breathe as an interconnected social commentary.  Part exhibit, part performance, her latest art project is about consideration. How do we consider the situation of someone we’ve never met?

In her blog post about the show, earlier this week, Susie mused, “What is my reflection, projection, bias, or just wishful thinking?  How do we consider how we consider?”

She’s really excited about this long-in-the-making project.  She also wants you to know that she’s grateful to hub14, dramaturge Cathy Gordon, and for the technical support provided by James Kendal.

Body Percussion Festival opens tonight at Harbourfront

Tonight, a unique and exciting festival begins in Toronto.  Body Percussion Festival is dedicated to dance and other movement arts that create music and percussion through the body, footwear, and instruments that act as extensions of the body.

Body Percussion Festival is curated by Artistic Director Viv Moore, whose eccentric journey in dance has led her through English Music Hall, Clog, and, Butoh, amongst many other forms. The festival highlights the contagious energy of rhythm, playfulness and surprising humour that emerge from skilled improvisation, choreography and interplay between artists and the audience.

Moore has sought out both community-based and professional artists to participate in the festival to curate three unique performances with six performers for each show. The festival’s eclectic group of artists include: Inuit Throat Singer Iva; Montreal Gumboot Dancer Sipho Ndlela, originally from South Africa; Indigenous Artist Brian Solomon performing ‘Dances to Acknowledge the Land’; Kapa Haka Dance by Whakatopu Kotahi; English Sword Dance with Toronto Women’s Sword; Body Percussion by former Stomp performer Troy Sexton Rhythm Works; Belly Dance with Roula Said; Ottawa Valley Step Dancers Kerry and Tom Fitzgerald; 2012 Canadian Beatbox champion, Scott Jackson; Bharatanatyam Dance with Nova Dance; Ethnic Contemporary with Sashar Zarif; A Capella Singing and Vocal Percussion with Jane Miller; Tap Dancer Travis Knights; Flamenco Dance performed by ViDAnza; Body Percussion and Georgian Polyphony by MusiCamp; and Body Percussion with Body Percussion Ensemble of Toronto.

This creative and fun-filled event makes a special bond between performer and audience through novel improvisations, choreography and sounds that can only be derived from the body, as no music instrumentation is used at all. All the artists are new to the festival, and Moore is proud to give Canadian talent this unique chance to showcase their Body Percussion skills.
