Provincial Election October 10th
The Ontario Provincial election is fast approaching, and it is important that we are all well researched and aware of where the candidates stand on the state of the arts. Here are some highlights of the major parties:
Liberal Party
No Major changes in their arts platform, but they do promise and increase in arts funding:
Increased annual funding to the Ontario Arts Council to almost $55 million and boosted the Ontario Trillium Foundation to $120 million by 2009/10.
Conservative Party
Though the big focus of the Conservative arts platform is on the film industry, they have some creative ideas, including encouraging youth under 20 to go to the arts by offering programs that will let them in for free. There is a “Youth Passport” program (this is a pure coincidence!) that will allow youth under 20 into Ontario run cultural/arts facilities for free. Also at-risk youth will have access to free tickets, though it is not completely clear how this will be done.
They will also honour the money commitments that the Liberals made to the OAC.
Both the NDP and the Green Party do not have any specific plans in their platform regarding the arts.

The Canada Council Strategic Plan Consultation - Update
From the CDA Bulletin
With the completion of our consultations on the Strategic Plan discussion paper, we have been working on compiling the extensive input we received into a series of reports and also drafting the 2008-2011 Strategic Plan.
The final report on our discussions with stakeholders including national arts service organizations, arts funders at the provincial, territorial and municipal levels, and specific organizations with an interest in the Council’s work is now available.
The report on the input received through the online survey, produced by Hill Strategies Research Inc. is also available.
You can read both reports by clicking on the following link:

Our strategic plan will be available on our web site in October.

CCA : One-Day Symposium on the Role of the Arts and Culture in Canadian Public Diplomacy
From the CDA Bulletin
The Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA) is pleased to announce that before its next National Policy Conference in Ottawa on March 19-20th , 2008 - whose detailed program will be made public early next autumn - the Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA) is organizing for November 22nd in Montreal a one-day symposium on the role of the arts and culture in Canadian public diplomacy.
The CCA invites you to participate in this reflection and join with experts from Canada and the international field to develop a renewed appreciation for the role of the arts in public diplomacy. It is the hope of the CCA that this symposium will help to build a broad consensus about the role of the arts and culture sector in advancing our national foreign policy objectives with new strategies and resolve.
The day will end with a ceremony in which the CCA will present its annual awards: the Keith Kelly Award for Cultural Leadership and the Diplôme d'honneur.
Put these events in your calendar and be with us to ensure that Canadian culture keep its place on the international scene. The full details of the Symposium and the registration form will be made public in September.

CHRC Presents Tools for Performing Arts Presenters
From the CDA Bulletin
The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) continues to expand its suite of tools and resources for workers in the cultural sector with the release of a Competency Chart and Profile for Presenters.
Funded by the Government of Canada's Sector Council Program, and building on the extensive work it has carried out in the area of cultural management over the past three years, CHRC has developed this chart and profile in close collaboration with the FCCF (Fédération culturelle des Canadiens français), RIDEAU (Réseau indépendant des diffuseurs d'événements artistiques unis), and CAPACOA (Canadian Arts Presenting Association /Association canadienne des organismes artistiques).
Presenters were taken to include such titles as artistic director, cultural and artistic program coordinator, cultural program supervisor, general manager / director / general director, theatre manager, venue manager, cultural centre manager, director of programming, chief entertainment officer, buyer or purchaser, impresario (considered an "old-fashioned" term), programmer (used more in Europe than in North America), and promoter (most often used when the person performing the role is not attached to a specific venue).
These valuable tools will assist Performing Arts Presenters and those with an interest in the field to evaluate their own skills and determine whether additional training is required. This material can also be applied in developing competency development programs, negotiating and customizing training programs, developing/reviewing career planning programs, creating recruitment profiles, and writing individual position descriptions.
The chart and profile can be found on the CHRC website.
CHRC has also conducted an extensive Training Gaps Analysis (TGA) based on the skills identified in the chart. Recommendations from the TGA include:
Increase awareness and understanding of the presenter's role in the performing arts industry
Facilitate access to professional development and networking opportunities.
Develop more formalized training programs at the post-secondary level.
Encourage mentorship and internship programs.
Recognize the importance of networking to presenters.
The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) strives to be at the centre of vision and forward thinking in the area of cultural human resources development. CHRC brings together representatives of arts disciplines and cultural industries in the cultural sector to address the training and career development needs of cultural workers - artists, creators, technical staff, managers and all others engaged professionally in the sector, including the self-employed. To become a member of CHRC please visit our website.

Press Release: Critical Thinking for Cultural Managers learning module
From the CDA Bulletin
The Cultural Human Resources Council CHRC is proud to announce the release of a unique online course: Critical Thinking for Cultural Managers learning module.
In association with the Council of Ontario Universities, Learning Advanced Essential Skills Online (LAESO) initiative, this interactive module builds on the conceptual framework of the CHRC's Competency Profile to further clarify the roles critical thinking plays in cultural management.
Funded by the Government of Canada's Sector Council Program and developed by emerging Cultural Managers this material is designed allow practicing Cultural Managers to engage with various aspects of "critical thinking" as it pertains to their everyday work.
These aspects include generating innovative directions for one's organization; finding commonalities across divergent groups and interests; and responding to, and productively negotiating conflict and contingency as they arise. Content for this module, comprising 2 to 3 hours of engagement, will consist of various definitions of "critical thinking", in accessible and relevant language; short self-assessment exercises; and a series of interactive case stories depicting everyday problems or issues in which Cultural Managers must put their critical thinking skills into play.
Major topics discussed throughout this module include Creating a "Big Plan", Developing a Network, Administrating the "Big Plan, and Generating Change. "Interactive scenarios" allow for the opportunity to take on the role of a new Project Manager having to put critical thinking skills in play in articulating a vision and strategy to other key members of your organization.
Susan Annis, Executive Director of the Cultural Human Resources Council notes: "This course is designed to sharpen critical thinking skills for Cultural Managers. Developed with the advice and direction of practicing Cultural Managers, it is lively and practical, reflecting their day-to-day realities. We hope it will resonate with Managers across the sector."
This online module is available on CHRC's web site.

(for exact class times see below)
Fee: $125
Max: 12 participants
Please fill people in with the following information and if they want to register tell them to email me: moynan@artsexy.ca
Brief outline:
Virtual Bodies is a short, but intense, workshop aimed at artists/dancers/performers who are interested in live performance practices, within technologised spaces. The workshop will explore the relationships of the body in performance to the technologies used to make the work, and to the context and spaces in which the work exists. Taking an approach that is part practical, part critique, we will be focussing on how a live body interacts with technologised representations.
Running across six sessions, the workshop will culminate in a public presentation of the developed projects, as part of the Hysteria Festival. Participants should come prepared with an idea or project that they want to develop and experiment with, and while performance experience is useful, it is not necessary. The workshop would also be useful for re-considering or re-working an existing piece of work.
Examples of strategies that will be considered include (but are not limited to): live performance with projection and/or sound, performance for camera, video performance and virtual presence. Participants will be encouraged to be ambitious as well as practical and supportive of each other. Virtual Bodies offers participants the opportunity to experiment and explore with new ways of working and to bring a project to presentation stage, within a creative and dynamic environment.

Grindl Kuchirka's "Dancing Clown" sessions are designed to bring more depth to your acting and more soul to your dancing by experiencing the creative movement and dance of the clown. In fact there has been a natural cross fertilization between these two art forms since the first cave man tripped and fell while dancing the great hunt story around the tribe's evening fire.
Experience the essence of clown, and the simplicity of expressing comedy through movement.
Discover how movement can amplify humor, and what lies behind that illusive quality called timing.
Explore classical, modern and free dance, choreography, improvisation, and pedestrian movement.
Focus on anatomy and learn where the impulse of movement originates.
This workshop is available for clowns, dancers, actors, directors, musicians and movement artists.
Dance experience is not necessary.
"By playing with the archetypal roles of the clown throughout history --- from romantic poetry to modern tragedy --- we will re-create the many dances of the clown, from deep profound sadness to sparkling, uninhibited hilarity ---- and have a lot of fun!"
Grindl Kuchirka is a unique Canadian artist who combines the dedication and discipline of the dancer and the whimsical spontaneity of the clown.
With extensive training in dance and movement as well as 28 years of experience as a professional clown, Grindl has performed in North America, Europe and Asia. She has created, developed and conducted her signature "Dancing Clown Workshop" as well as choreographed for Dance, Theatre and Television in Canada, France
and Holland. She has led numerous workshops in dance and clown for people of all ages.
Her artistic endeavors have been generously supported by The Ontario Arts Council, Laidlaw Foundation and The Canada Council for The Arts.
Please pass this on to anyone you feel would be interested. Thank you

Deborah Hay Workshop at Toronto Dance Theatre
Monday Oct 22 2007 to Friday Oct 26 2007
Following Christopher House's participation in the Solo Performance Commissioning Project in Findhorn, Scotland last summer, Deborah Hay is coming to work with Toronto Dance Theatre from October 22nd to 26th, and there are five spots on offer to members of the professional dance community.
Since the mid-nineties Deborah has focused almost exclusively on the choreography of solo dances. Deborah's orientation to dance is activated by attention to practices of performance. In an intense learning environment she challenges the experienced performer with movement concepts that trigger multiple levels of
perception at once. She choreographs the world "between" moments, where movement proclivity plays second fiddle to exercised inquiry.
The week will comprise morning and afternoon sessions, daily from 10:15am until 5:30pm. Registration will be on a first come, first served basis and priority will be given to those who are able to attend the full week.
The fee for the five days is $200 + GST.

Deborah Hay at TDT
TDT launches the season with a week-long intensive workshop with world-renowned choreographer Deborah Hay, acknowledged by critics and historians as one of the most relevant and influential representatives of post-modern dance. The workshop with culminate with a performance at the Winchester Street Theatre on October
27th, 2007 at 8pm, where Ms. Hay will present her own solo seeing seeing, and a second work, A Lecture on the Performance of Beauty, which combines her choreography and text.
Deborah Hay was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1941. She was one the founding members of the Judson Dance Theatre in New York, a group of experimental artists that was deeply influenced by Merce Cunningham and John Cage. This group became one of the most radical and explosive 20th century art movements. Deborah Hay and is acknowledged by critics and historians as one of the most relevant and influential representatives of post-modern dance.
She has collaborated, with visual artists Robert Rauschenberg, Alex Hay, Tina Girouard, Carolee Schneemann and with composers Pauline Oliveros, Ellen Fullman, and Terry Riley, and choreographers Trisha Brown, Yvonne Rainer, Simone Forti, and Steve Paxton among others. Her writings include three books, the most recent, My Body, the Buddhist published by Wesleyan University Press. She lives in Austin, TX and tours extensively.
By 1967, Hay had already achieved a prominent status as a young choreographer, and her unique style began to emerge as a distinct voice within the aesthetics of Judson. Sharing with her colleagues the ideas that dance engage with other art forms, and that the artificial distinction between trained and untrained
performers be challenged, she focused on large-scale dance projects involving untrained dancers, fragmented and choreographed music accompaniment, and the execution of ordinary movement patterns performed under stressful conditions.
In 1970 she left New York to live in a community in northern Vermont. Soon, she distanced herself from the performing arena, producing 10 "Circle Dances", performed on 10 consecutive nights within a single community and no audience whatsoever. Thus began a long period of reflection about how dance is transmitted and presented.
In 1976 Hay left Vermont and moved to Austin, Texas. Her attention focused on a set of practices ("playing awake") that engaged the performer on several levels of consciousness at once. While developing her concepts over the course of 15 years, she instituted a yearly four-month group workshop that culminated in large group public performances and from these group pieces she distilled her solo dances.
In the late 1990's Deborah Hay focused almost exclusively on rarified and enigmatic solo dances based on her new experimental choreographic method, such as The Man Who Grew Common in Wisdom, Voilà, The Ridge and Room, performing them around the world and passing them on to noted performers in the US, Europe, and
Australia. She also choreographed a duet for herself and Mikhail Baryshnikov, Single Duet, which toured with the Past/Forward project in 2000.
Hay's work has now reached a new stage, where she redefines the inimitable choreographic method of her solo pieces in collaboration with highly trained dancers. In 2004 she received a NYC Bessie award for her choreography of the quartet The Match, which toured in Austin, Houston, London, Nottingham, Montpellier, and Paris in 2005. Her international prominence continues to grow. News is her newest solo work.

SUBMIT TO MAYWORKS 2008!
The Mayworks Festival invites submissions from artists, artists’ collectives, unions, independent producers and community groups. Every year, the festival program is a combination of proposals submitted and programs developed by the Program Committee.
The DEADLINE for the 2008 festival is NOVEMBER 1, 2007. Below are submission guidelines. To download the complete application form and guidelines in PDF form please go to our website at mayworks.ca. This year, Mayworks encourages proposals for its opening night event, the queer event and the family/children’s program.
WHO WE ARE:
Mayworks Festival of Working People and the Arts is an arts festival that celebrates working class culture. Founded in 1986 by Labour Council, Mayworks is Canada’s largest and oldest labour arts festival. The festival programs artists and events that have a social justice focus and are relevant to all working people.
Mayworks Festival is NOT a funding body. We work in partnership with unions, organizations and artists to develop, promote and present events that fit our mandate. We are committed to paying artists’ fees.
OUR MANDATE:
All workers share a common struggle for decent wages, healthy working conditions and a living culture. Mayworks is committed to showing artists of diverse backgrounds and artistic forms, and to highlighting labour issues little talked about.
EQUITY POLICY:
Mayworks Festival acknowledges that we live in a society rooted in oppression and inequalities; that structural injustice and unconscious prejudice influence our experiences; and the importance of incorporating the knowledge and guidance from oppressed people’s experience within the organization.
The following “designated groups” are identified as being disadvantaged in employment and in society:
• Women
• Indigenous People
• People with Disabilities
• People of Colour
• Queer-identified people (namely lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, transsexual, and inter-sexed)
Mayworks also acknowledges that low-income earners, those living below the poverty line, and other economically marginalized people are also disadvantaged in employment and society.
CRITERIA FOR ASSESSMENT:
The Program Committee assesses proposals based on:
• does it fit with our mandate?
• can it be finished in a limited time?
• is the proposal clear and complete?
• is it financially feasible? does it have other sources of funding?
• does it include diversity of art forms/practices and artists?
• is there outreach to equity-seeking audiences?
• the support materials
• self-identification as an equity-seeking group/individual
• does it have and apply an equity framework?
• is it fun, captivating, entertaining?
Emphasis will be placed on equity, financial feasibility and whether it’s doable in a limited time.

Marketing Manager
Are you a creative thinker with a head for numbers? Do you shudder at the thought of working in a cubicle? Do you LOVE the performing arts? Do you read the newspaper for the ads, pay more attention to TV commercials than the shows, keep a mental note of spelling mistakes on promotional materials?
FLIP is looking for a clear and effective communicator to plan, manage and execute effective marketing strategies, including developing budgets and media buying. You have a kick-ass portfolio of work that includes print, broadcast and online advertising, collateral materials, brand identity management and viral campaigns. You have a flare for funky promotional ideas and can get pretty much anything for free (or at least by trading something good!) You have a keen eye for detail and are comfortable working with printers, graphic designers, sales reps and clients. Finally, you like to work hard and have lots of fun. The successful candidate has at least 4 years’ marketing experience in an arts and/or entertainment environment. Candidates must be proficient in MS Office and comfortable working on a MAC platform. Candidates must have excellent English skills; preference will be given to bi-lingual candidates, particularly those fluent in French, Russian or Cantonese.
Tell us who you are and why you are perfect for this job. Please include your resume and salary expectations.

Publicist
Are you a strong writer who’s also not afraid to pick up the phone and talk? Do you have a solid roster of media contacts and an understanding of what it takes to build a story from sidebar to feature? Are you comfortable working with both traditional and online media? Are you fearless in the face of deadlines, and comfortable juggling concurrent projects? Most importantly, are you passionate about the arts with an undefeatable “can-do” attitude? FLIP is looking for an adept, detail-oriented
publicist to work on behalf of our arts and entertainment clients, with a focus on classical music. The ideal candidate has 2-4 years publicity experience, preferably in a
classical music/arts environment, is proficient in MS Office and comfortable working on a MAC platform. The ideal candidate is also creative, articulate, knowledgeable, bi-lingual and has a great sense of humour. Tell us who you are and why you are perfect for this job. Please include your resume and salary expectations.
