COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR BOARD MEMBERS

Artscape is inviting applications for appointment to The Green Arts Barns Community Association Board of Directors. The Green Arts Barns has been conceived as a dynamic community-driven space, a home for experimentation and innovation, a place where people from all walks of life will come together to make their community a better place to live, work and play.

Click here http://www.torontoartscape.on.ca/barns_boardcall to download the Call for Applications for Board Members and the Application for Appointment.

The deadline for submission is Monday, December 10, 2007 at 4:00 p.m.

The management and governance framework for the Green Arts Barns like the project itself is designed to promote synergy, collaboration and community engagement. By combining the resources and expertise of Artscape with the voluntary stewardship, entrepreneurship and creativity of the Green Arts Barns tenants and community stakeholders in the neighbourhood, it will allow the project to benefit from the commitment and connections of local stakeholders and also ensure sound operational and fiscal management.

To facilitate strong local governance from the outset, the initial steps to create an independent non-profit organization, with a duly constituted Board of Directors, that will assume the stewardship of the Covered Street Barn and the Community Gallery are being undertaken. This organization will be known as the Green Arts Barns Community Association.

The Green Arts Barns Community Association will manage, operate and govern The Covered Street Barn and The Community Gallery
space.

Located at 76 Wychwood Avenue, south of St. Clair and west of Bathurst, Artscape’s Green Arts Barns will transform Toronto’s historic Wychwood TTC Streetcar Repair Barns into a 60,000 square foot multi-tenant arts, environmental and community centre. The Green Arts Barns will employ green technology and be the first heritage building in Toronto to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.

The deadline for submission is Monday, December 10, 2007 at 4:00 p.m.

Classes & Workshops

Series 8:08 is pleased to announce a co-production with the Dancemakers Centre For Creation:
Tom Stroud
Central Focus: An Intensive Exploration in Theatrical Improvisation

Dec 3-7, 2007
10am-5pm (1pm-2pm lunch)

Dancemakers Studio - 55 Mill St. Cannery Building #58, Studio 313, The Distillery Historic District
$400

********** Special Early Bird Discount! $300 if you register with a $25 deposit by Nov 15! *********

The Dancemakers' company members will be attending this week-long ATC, so there are only 8 available spots. Sign up quickly! The workshop is open to experienced and emerging professional dancers and actors who have a background in movement-based training or physical theatre. Participants will be required to memorize a small passage of text prior to the workshop.

Central Focus is an approach to Theatrical Improvisation developed by Tom Stroud over his twenty-five years of creating and training actors and dancers. Each day allows for a period of skills development and the application of these skills to theatrical, movement-based improvisation.

Skill development is designed to enhance concentration, relaxation, sensitivity, integrate voice and gesture, and to increase the individuals' spontaneity and range of expression. Performance skills will focus on developing awareness of the source and flow of creative impulse, exploring artistic boundaries, using text in improvisation, and supporting the development of an improvisation. Individual attention will be given to assist in identifying personal patterns and challenges. Care is given to develop a safe environment for exploration where each participant is encouraged to respectfully push their own boundaries while creating a solid foundation and understanding of the improvisational techniques and their applications to performance and/or choreographic exploration.

Artists' Talk on December 4th from 6pm-8pm
In tandem with the workshop, Tom Stroud will discuss the development of his training and performance techniques in improvisation and their application in performance. Through the discussion and some examples of Tom's work, the participants will gain insight into this fascinating world of theatrical improvisation.

Presence In Movement And Sound

A mindfulness meditation approach to improvisation with body and voice, harmonizing inside and outside.

We are always moving – breathing, blinking, swallowing, fidgeting, gesturing. The body moves constantly until it dies. By being present to this flow of activity with awareness and without judgment or manipulation; by experiencing each moment as an adventure, we can let go of habitual patterns, find genuine expression and be more awake. To accomplish this, the core disciplines of this work develop the ability to be continuously present in body, mind and the senses; and 'allow' movement to happen organically, rather than indulge the thinking mind's need to think of something and then 'do' it.

Benefits – General
- Be able to stay in the present moment and work with fear and hesitation.
- Expand the range of choices you can make.
- Listen more deeply to energy/emotion in yourself and others.
- Bypass rational thought and access unconscious sources.
- Develop curiosity and a light touch.
- Facilitate healing by releasing habitual patterns held by the mind/body.

Benefits for Actors, Singers and Dancers
- Work more effectively with nervous energy and anticipation.
- Increase aliveness in transitions.
- Increase emotional depth.
- Enhance listening skill.
- Create a clear channel for conveying images and ideas through speech.
- Access unconscious sources forcharacter or choreography.

Sunday 25 November, $60.00 ($45.00 Actor's Equity, CADA), 9:15-5:00, Downtown Toronto location.

100% authentic Brazilian Martial Arts and Dance workshop by a 4th degree (highest possible) Grandmaster straight from the 'City of
God' in Rio de Janeiro!

Nov 23 7-10 PM (Capoeira and talk by Mestre Derli)
Nov 24 11AM - 2PM (Maculelé, Samba)
Nov 25 2-5 PM (Maculelé, Samba, Capoeira)

PRICES: $45.00 for any 1 day, $70 for any 2 days, $90 for all 3 days

Wear something comfortable that you can move in easily, definitely no shorts however. Track pants, or martial arts pants and a loose fitting t-shirt are recommended.

Come join us! Over the course of 3 days, enjoy Capoeira, Samba, Maculelé and experience the intense presence of Mestre Derli
- the highest level Capoiera Grandmaster from the 'City of God' in Rio de Janeiro. You've seen the movie by the same name, now
experience the most real-deal, raw, street-style Brazilian capoeira Master from the City of God, who has lived through it all.

Over the course of the workshop, you will learn Capoeira, Samba and Maculelé - forms of Brazilian martial arts and dance with deep Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous roots. All forms will be taught by Mestre Derli himself, with assistance from professional Brazilian dancer Tatiana Ramos for Samba movements for the ladies. You can also hear first-hand the Grandmaster talk about his experiences, translated on the spot. A very deep and enriching experience. Do yourself a favour and don't miss it.

While there are many worthy capoeira schools and teachers around the city, this is a clear cut above, as a Capoeira Master with this much experience and depth of knowledge is rare even in Brazil, not to mention in Toronto. There is a certain honesty and grit in Mestre Derli's capoeira style, with its focus on street-style effectiveness, on subtle yet devastating movements and not on flashy acrobatics.

More about Mestre Derli:

Derli da Silva Costa, known as Mestre (Master) Derli, was born in Rio de Janeiro in the area of Estacio de Sá, in the southwest
of Brazil. Mestre Derli started Capoeira at the age of eight and has been practicing Capoeira for forty-three years.

Known as a living legend of Capoeira, he has received numerous medals and awards and has been called one of the seven wonders of Rio de Janeiro. He has taught and given workshops around the world, in Ethiopia, India, Chile and Canada, and helped to organize Capoeira in Brazil, as well as the National Capoeira Association of Canada. He is the winner of the Capoeira Championships of 1979, 1998 and 1999.

As the most important Capoeira master from Rio de Janeiro's favela (slum) "City of God" made famous by the movie of the same name, Mestre Derli is a true street-trained Capoeira master, as authentic as they get. He is able to recount story after story of the true evolution of Capoeira as a way of life, with its very real struggles, extreme violence, hard-earned respect - and as he recounts his stories, they often include real-life characters we have seen in the film. The movie's notorious character Lil 'Zé is just one of the many gangsters and favela residents that knew and highly respected Mestre Derli, and participated in and came to watch his classes.

Mestre Derli's life in Capoeira and in the City of God is a very important part of Brazilian history. Last year in a trip to Canada, Mestre Derli wrote down the story of his life and his legacy. There are plans to make a book based on these writings, which Mestre Derli will call "The Light at End of the Tunnel" which tells his story from childhood when he was struggling in the streets of Rio de Janeiro to decades later when he became an official representative of Capoeira even involved in the process of trying to establish Capoeira as an Olympic sport. Presently an organization in Brazil is making a documentary about his Capoeira legacy, and a history professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro is writing another book about him too.

He has received special recognition from the City of Rio de Janeiro with regards to his work in rescuing many street kids within that city, by turning them away from a life of crime, and instead turning them towards a life of discipline, training, community and hard work.

A board member of community of City of God, the Technical Director of 'Capoeira Fluminense Federation' of Rio de Janeiro, Founder, Counselor, and member of the Capoeira Fraternity of Brazil and the World, Mestre Derli is truly a living Capoeira master of the highest ranking.

"Unleash your Inner Goddess"
A sensual dancing and striptease course with Sophie.

Warning: May lead to increased confidence and feeling beautiful!

January 2008

A story about Susie
Susie felt that there was someone hiding inside of her. That woman inside wanted to flip her hair when picking up something on
the floor. Wear high heels. Wiggle her hips when she walked. And she knew how to move and dance naturally. She liked to flirt with
her eyes. She was confident, happy and sexy. Was she really Susie? Was Susie ready to unleash this side of her on the world? Are
you!?

In this course we will learn:
* The power of Sensual Movement
* An Exotic Dance routine including floor, wall and standing moves
* How to give a lapdance
* A Pole dancing routine, complete with spins
* A Striptease routine designed to reveal our playful side! We will also have a performance/play session for those women who want to perform. This is an optional night but you might be suprised to find yourself there!

Who is this course designed for?
This course is designed for any woman who wants to unashamedly embrace her essence as a woman. Warning: doing this course may
lead to increased confidence, laughing out loud, a secretive smile, a new-found skip in your step and other habits destined to shake your world up a bit! All moves can be modified for any level of strength, flexibility and fitness so everyone welcome!

Who is Sophie Luxton?
Sophie Luxton is a speaker, instructor and performer. She is the creator and owner of "Superfly Dance Fitness" and is one of Toronto's favourite instructors. She teaches Hip Hop and various styles of "sexy" dancing, including her very popular "Pussycat Dolls" class. Sophie Luxton has been teaching exotic dancing for 5 years. Sophie says, "I find that there is endless power and freedom in embracing our true selves as women through movement and expression. My aim is to open women up to more happiness, more giggles and more fun in their lives and for them to feel the magic within...it was there hiding all along!"

What are the classes like?
Every class will include a full-body warm-up based in yoga, pilates, sensual movement and dance. These movements are designed
to strengthen, stretch and move the body in ways to celebrate a woman's shape and expression. The moves will challenge and delight and allow each woman to find her own path of movement. After the warm-up, each class will move into either learning new moves for a routine, practicing transitions, learning "tricks-of-the-trade" or just dancing! The classes held at Studio 204 will concentrate on learning a pole dancing routine and lap dancing skills.

Payment and Missed class policy
The "Sensual You" course offers 12 hours of instruction. There are eight 1-hour classes and two 2-hour classes. We also include
a playday/performance time for interested students! The fee is $350. A $175 non-refundable deposit is needed to reserve a spot in class and the $175 balance remaining is due at the first class. Khmer Dance Traditions (classical dance from Cambodia) with Peter Chin, Yim Savann and Phon Sopheap

Saturday January 12 and Sunday January 13
10:00 a.m. ˆ 1:00 p.m.
National Ballet School, 400 Jarvis Street, concourse studio
Cost: $60 or $35/day

For more information and to register please call: 416-593-8455 or e-mail info@tribalcracklingwind.ca

Yim Savann and Phon Sopheap are two of the most prominent male classical dancers of their generation in Cambodia. Together they share a wealth of movement vocabulary and dance ethos that will form the basis of this workshop.

Both Savann and Sopheap have worked extensively with dancers and other artists from all over the world. The knowledge they have gained from these collaborations has given them a clear direction for presenting and transposing the Khmer dance traditions. Far from only teaching Khmer dance technique, Savann and Sopheap will join with Toronto choreographer Peter Chin to guide the participants in using Khmer dance technique to generate movement of their own in a creative situation that respects both the body sourced movement sensibility of the participant, and the Khmer dance sources. There will also be video segments shown of classical Khmer dance and daily life of artists in Cambodia to give context to the movement workshop.

Sopheap is a specialist in the monkey role from the famous classical Khmer Ballet. This role is known for its athletic physicality and cunning imitation of primate behaviour turned into dance. Savann is a specialist in the ogre/giant roles, known for its elegance and line as well as its strong sculptural presence.

This workshop is open to anybody interested in dance, creative movement, Cambodian culture, the Ramayana and South East Asian culture in general.
