DUO congratulates Lucy Rupert for being ‘Harolded’ !!
On May 28, 2007 Lucy Rupert was named as a 2007 Haroldee. As Mimi Beck, who presented the award to Lucy noted:
I’m delighted to give (the Harold Award) to a dear friend, colleague and major multi-tasker: a kind of a pentuple threat: choreographer, dancer, actor, musician/composer, scholar, Brave New Administrator, education and outreach worker, and so importantly, a true arts community builder.
The Harold Awards is an annual event that honours arts professionals who are not only outstanding in their discipline, but who are dedicated to making the dance and theatre community in Toronto thrive, either on or off stage.
Lucy Rupert received this award for her tireless work as a choreographer, dancer, actor, musician/composer, and administrator. Through her dedication as an artist and educator she is helping to build community, through her own outreach and education. She has toured across Canada, and most recently to in Stuttgart Germany. Her talents extend to performing fire stunts and dance for Circus Orange, as well as working as an actor with Theatre Rusticle. She has danced in works by Viv Moore, Danny Grossman, Caroline Niklas-Gordon, Bridget Cauthrey, Jenn Goodwin and Susan Cash, among others.
Lucy also has her own dance company, Blue Ceiling dance projects, for which she draws inspiration from her surroundings, including history, literature and visual arts . Her extreme dedication to her own work was illustrated most recently 11 x forgetting, A Tale of Amnesia, presented in February-March in which Lucy performed with her cast on over her recently broken wrist.
Congratulations Lucy!
History of the Harold Awards
(from www.theharoldawards.com <http://www.theharoldawards.com> )
The Harolds were established in 1994 by a group of thirteen Toronto theatre artists after the award’s namesake passed away that year. Harold was an omnipresent fan of the arts and a renowned heckler, his distinctive voice rustled up the scene for many years. The independent theatre and dance communities celebrate his rambunctious spirit at this glorious annual event.
To be Harolded is an honour of the highest subversive order bestowed upon individuals who contribute to the strident glory of these vibrant communities, and who show outstanding dedication, on or off stage. The tradition calls for those Harolded to organize the following year’s event, and to pass the honour on to a person whom they feel worthy.
The Harolds is the only awards night of its kinds: as unique as Harold was. This is an evening of surprise, pride, and serious celebration.
Congratulations to Johanna Bergfelt
on her nomination for a Dora Mavor Moore Award for outstanding solo performance
(presented at princess production’s IN(side)tiME: made in canada)
The much-anticipated announcement of the Dora Mavor Moore nominations brought great news to us at princess productions. We are pleased to share the news the Johanna Bergfelt was nominated for her outstanding solo performance of Scarachnia. This powerful work, created by Louis Laberge-Cote, was presented at IN(side)tiME: made in canada (September 28th -30th, 2006), and photographed for the reception room exhibit by Rick O’Brien. Our warmest congratulations to Johanna, who stirred our fascinated audience with her intense and haunting presence. We at princess productions are proud to bring such compelling dance artists to the stage at our biennial festival dance: made in canada, enabling performers like Johanna to exemplify their talent on a new nationally curated platform.

Arts Research Monitor Volume: 6 Issue No: 2 Diversity, immigration and the arts
This month: a focus on research into diversity, immigration and the arts, including a major British report on cultural diversity and the arts, a Canadian survey of arts participation and attitudes towards the arts of diverse groups, a Canadian study of immigrants’ literacy skills, and a report on the social and civic participation of immigrants to Canada.
>From CDA Bulletin
Articles:
Navigating Difference: Cultural Diversity and Audience Development
This British report, with contributions from 40 different people, highlights the case for greater diversity, the complexities of diversity, the current diversity of the U.K.’s cultural organizations, examples of how other sectors engage with diversity, and tips on how to achieve diversity.
Diversity in Canada
This 2006 survey examines the arts attendance, involvement in the arts, and attitudes towards the arts of six target population groups in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. The six target groups are Chinese, South Asian, West Asian/Arab, Black, Hispanic and Italian.
Literacy Skills among Canada’s Immigrant Population
This report, based on findings from the 2001 Census and the 2003 International Adult Literacy and Skills Survey, highlights how Canada is becoming increasingly diverse, with significant immigration from non-European countries. Most recent immigrants are of working age and contribute significantly to labour force growth in Canada.
Making Connections: Social and Civic Engagement among Canadian Immigrants
The report finds that immigrants “tend to be very involved in social and civic life, and to make significant contributions to Canada. They give generously of their time and money to the voluntary sector. They are interested and active citizens, engaged in current affairs and in helping others in their community…. Established immigrants tend to have much higher participation rates on all measures.”
Congratulations to Susanna Hood!

PARTNERSHIP WITH ONTARIO GOVERNMENT
TO HELP STUDENTS AND ARTISTS
Kick-Off For Arts Education Program Starts Today
Toronto—DanceWorks today announced that the organization will participate in the Arts Education Partnership Initiative, an Ontario Government program that matches money raised by arts and community organizations.
The program recognizes the important role of arts education in Ontario. Organizations like DanceWorks can help keep students in school, while building their self confidence, problem solving skills and creativity.
“The Ontario government is investing in arts education to ensure the success of our students,” said Minister of Culture Di Cocco. “Arts education is a necessity and raises academic achievement in all areas.”
“An arts education makes a big difference in helping children excel intellectually, physically and emotionally,” said Minister of Education Kathleen Wynne. “By studying the arts -- such as dance, drama, music, and media and visual arts -- students learn to work more effectively with others and think more creatively and critically.”
The Arts Education Partnership Initiative matches money raised by 119 arts and community organizations from private donors to support new or enhanced arts education projects. The initiative is administered by the Ontario Arts Foundation. Successful applicants were selected by a review team managed by the Ontario Arts Council.
Premier Dalton McGuinty announced the program in May 2006. The program has a total of $4 million in funding support from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture.
The Arts Education Partnership Initiative is one of several government programs supporting arts education. Others include the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Learning Through the Arts, and a variety of arts education programs administered by the Ontario Arts Council.
Mimi Beck – Recipient of the 2007 Dance Ontario Award
Allison Cummings and Deva Gunaseelan of the Award Committee of the Dance Ontario Board of Directors are delighted to announce that the Association’s 600 plus members province-wide have selected Mimi Beck as the recipient of the 2007 Dance Ontario Award.
The Award is given to those who have contributed substantially to the development of dance in this province over a significant period of time. Recipients have included Charlotte Holmes, Grant Strate, Lawrence & Miriam Adams, Brian Robinson, Trish Beatty, David Earle, Peter Randazzo, Lois Smith, Herbert Whittaker, Janet Baldwin, Boris Volkoff, Nesta William Toumine, Judy Jarvis, Joysanne Sidimus, Dr. R. N. Laidlaw, Rina Singha, Peter Boneham, Gladys Forrester, Vera Davis, Carol Anderson, Rose Hill, Danny Grossman and Patricia Miner.
Mimi Beck is the Curator of DanceWorks, Toronto’s longest running dance series, where she has presented diverse and innovative programming for over twenty-five years. Her contribution to the discipline of dance is considerable and in raising the profile of dance artists, it is nothing short of formidable. She has presented the choreography of over 270 dance artists on the DanceWorks Mainstage Series and introduced many emerging choreographers through CoWorks Series events.
Dance critics have acknowledged her contribution to Toronto’s scene commenting -
“As a curator Mimi has always allowed instinct as much as intellect to guide her”. Michael Crabb
“It is at DanceWorks where I gleaned a deeper understanding and appreciation of the varieties of dance expression and where I encountered, for the first time, such a formidable talent as Bill T. Jones. DanceWorks was backing him before the rest of the world knew how good he was. This is all tribute to the singular ability of curator Mimi Beck to suss out the creative mavericks within our midst and give them a platform on which to strut their stuff... I applaud her efforts and am grateful for having benefited from her generosity in wanting to share the dynamic spirit she continues to nurture in dance”. Deirdre Kelly
“Mimi Beck never intended to become a dancer, but it would be hard to imagine the Toronto dance scene without her. She is what the French call an animatrice, someone who makes things happen. What she primarily makes happen is DanceWorks, Toronto’s longest-running dance series and the one that has done most over the years to promote the risk-taking work of independent choreographers…For her, it is enough to discover the work and give it a showcase.” William Littler
“DanceWorks is second only to Harbourfront as one of the most significant presenters of dance in Toronto. The list of choreographers who have had works performed in DanceWorks covers Canada from sea to shining sea, with a good dollop of excellent dancesmiths from abroad. The series has helped educate people to the wonderful mysteries of dance, and if…we Torontonians are a more discerning audience, it is, in large measure, due to DanceWorks” Paula Citron.
Dance artists have recognized her support –
“Mimi Beck … a virtuoso at navigating the business and bureaucracy that support our field to the advantage of the staggering number of artists she has presented at DanceWorks... she has been instrumental in bringing scores of dancers and choreographers to prominence in this city”. Peggy Baker
“Curator, Mimi Beck, a visionary for Dance in Toronto and Canada, took the risk other presenters would not in giving COBA the opportunity to present its work publicly. The continued support and the friendship that has blossomed through our ties for the years that we have been part of this organization is immeasurable.” Charmaine Headley/Bakari E. Lindsay COBA
She is Executive Director of The Canadian Network of Dance Presenters, CanDance, a national arts service organization that supports the work of Canada's dance presenters within the dance community and its marketplace. Ms Beck works as a consultant to other arts organizations and has served as a juror and assessor for arts councils and foundations. Executive Director of Dance Ontario Association from 1991 – 2000, she has served on numerous boards, panels and committees and was a founder of Dancers For Life, a fundraiser for AIDS charities. Named “One of 19 who made a difference in the arts” by The Toronto Star in 1994, Ms Beck has initiated several projects to encourage dance literacy among adults and youth. She has hosted arts outreach activities and taught for the YMCA, Young People’s Theatre, Boards of Education and Community Centres.
Active in Toronto’s early independent dance movement as a choreographer and performer, Ms Beck received the first Canada Council Grant awarded to a Dance Curator in 1986. From 1990–1994, she was the Canadian Director of the U.S./Canada Performance Initiative, a bi-lateral touring exchange with Dance Theatre Workshop in New York and the National Performance Network. In 2006, Ms Beck received a Harold Award, honouring her contribution to the vibrant arts life of Toronto.
An event to celebrate her achievements will be scheduled shortly.

DUO, DTRC, STAF and TAPA have come together to sponsor a seminar on a topic vital to the success of any not-for-profit organization: How to find and keep good volunteers. Bob has managed volunteers for the Toronto International Film Festival, the HOT DOCS International Documentary Film Festival, and CanStage Theatre. He has also served as consultant for Dublin International Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, the Canadian Magazine Publishers Association, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Dubia Film Festival.
The seminar will be held Thursday, July 12, 2007, 1:00 – 4:00PM at the TAPA, Suite 210, 215 Spadina Avenue. The cost is $15. To register, call Slade Lander at 416.504.6429 extension 21 or e-mail slade@danceumbrella.net.

COBA Collective Of Black Artists
Children’s Dance and Drum Program
Registration and Open House September 14th and 15th
COBA’s performing arts school offers high quality dance education that is supported by a legacy of African history.
Our children’s dance and drumming program provides children three years and up with a solid foundation in contemporary dance forms (ballet, modern) and specialized training in the music and dance of Africa and the African Diaspora.
The primary training mechanism for African and Caribbean forms is A-Feeree. Taught exclusively at COBA Studios, A-Feeree helps conditions your child’s body to navigate the aesthetics of African and African Diasporic dances.
This unique method draws on the traditional dance culture of Africa’s Séné-Gambia region as well as indigenous fold dances from Trinidad & Tobago.
Children’s classes run September to June from Thursday to Saturday.
Each year, the program culminates in a year-end recital in which your child will have the opportunity to perform.
Curious? Bring your child to a FREE TRIAL CLASS during COBA’s open house (Sept 14th & 15th), or visit us online for more info.

Cultural Careers Council Ontario - THE SUMMER INSTITUTE 2007 ANNOUNCED
Cultural Careers Council Ontario (CCCO) in conjunction with Genovese, Vanderhoof & Associates and The Centre for Cultural Management, University of Waterloo announces the 2007 Summer Institute. The Summer Institute is a comprehensive professional training program for a career in fund-raising and marketing in the cultural sector. It is specifically designed for arts professionals and those who have a genuine interest in developing a career in arts marketing and fundraising. The Institute is a 3-week classroom training experience in a residential setting and it is held at the Centre for Cultural Management, University of Waterloo. This summer it will begin on Monday, July 30th and run until Friday, August 17th.
There is a dramatic lack of trained arts fund-raising and marketing personnel in the Canadian marketplace. Trained and experienced cultural fund-raisers and marketers are in short supply and high demand. Former graduates of the Summer Institute now hold senior management positions both in and out of the cultural sector.
The course of studies at the Institute, coordinated by Genovese and Vanderhoof includes marketing (ie. market research; subscriptions; philosophy and techniques; pricing; budgeting; target marketing; advertising; direct response; sales promotions; single ticket/event promotions; staffing and departmental structures and more) and fund-raising (ie. corporate, foundation, and individual; prospect research; sponsorship and philanthropic selling techniques; patron fund-raising, membership programs and mega-gift programs; proposal writing; fund-raising data base management; annual operating, capital, and endowment campaign and more).
The faculty for the Institute is drawn from leading professionals in the North American cultural industry. Participants spend their days in class, hearing lectures from faculty and guest faculty, and in the evenings and on weekends there are group activities planned: field trips to cultural events across southern Ontario (ie. theatre outings to Stratford Festival and Blyth Festival, a trip to St. Jacob’s Market, the Clay and Glass Gallery in Waterloo, a tour of Centre in the Square in Kitchener, and more). It is an exhausting but stimulating 3 weeks, full of learning and networking. Graduates become lifelong friends and colleagues. The graduates receive a Fundraising and Marketing for the Arts certificate from the Centre for Cultural Management, University of Waterloo on completion of the course.
For more information and to download a registration form, go to our website at www.workinculture.ca. Deadline to register is June 28, 2007

Class Descriptions
Vinyasa Yoga Level 1/2
An outgrowth of Ashtanga, Vinyasa yoga expands, integrates and juxtaposes postures through sun salutations. Sally's classes take influence from Ashtanga, Iyengar and Vini
Yoga, integrating asana, pranayama and meditation. Using music as a guide, we flow smoothly through challenging and inspiring sequences. Paying close attention to alignment, we work to develop balance, strength, and flexibility. Although we will practice as a group, emphasis is placed on the individual and modifications are encouraged. Sally's own yoga practice has been shaped and inspired by her background in dance, pilates and somatic movement and by her yoga teachers Kathryn Beet, Michael Siddal, Ante Pavlovic, Patricia
White and Kaustaub Desikachar. She was certified as a yoga instructor through Yogaspace (Toronto) with an advanced certificate in Healing Through Yoga.
Pilates Matwork Level 1/2
Moving through sequences on the floor that flow effortlessly one into another, this practice is an excellent workout for developing long lean muscles. With a concentration on core strength, stability and mobility, this class incorporates all principles of the Pilates movement system including breath, concentration, stamina, strength, flexibility and counter posture.
Sally studied as a teacher in the Stott Method under Kim Krauser (Nova Scotia) and continued her teacher training and certification at Body Harmonics in Toronto under Margo MacKinnon.
About Me
Based in Nova Scotia since 1999, Sally Morgan works independently and through her company Eastward Moving, as a choreographer, director, performer, teacher and producer.
Her choreography has been performed across Canada. She began training professionally in Toronto in 1994 and has traveled extensively with studies and work in dance, contact
improvisation and film/video. A founding member of Halifax collective The North End Dance Co-op, she continues to explore improvisation and the connections between landscape and the body through performance, research and teaching. 10 – 11:30 am
HUB 14
14 Markham Street
(one block west of Bathurst, north of Queen)
Meagan O’Shea will be teaching a contemporary dance class focusing on floor work, strength, endurance, and interpretation.
Meagan will be exploring different ways to achieve the same lines, balance, strength and physical discipline trained in a traditional contemporary technique class through other means. Specifically interested in exploring a training system that supports a broader range of the choreographic work being made today, she will focus on core strength, floor work, spatial awareness, multi- tasking coordination, dynamic variance, speaking, and of course some dancing!
This class is appropriate for dancers and physical performers wanting to explore new approaches.
Meagan O’Shea teaches alternative contemporary dance technique in Toronto and across Canada. Drawing on her experiences in training with dance innovators in the United States and Europe she combines core strength and clear lines with the freedom for personal investigation within her classes. Intention and specific physicality are explored through new movement patterns and dance combinations.
Space is limited.
To book a spot please contact Meagan at omeagan@gmail.com
Class is $9.
UPCOMING:
HUB 14 will also be offering morning classes from mid-August through October. These classes will sample the diverse range of new dance makers working in the city. O’Shea and Ame Henderson, as well as others will be teaching. Please check www.hub14.org <http://www.hub14.org> for details.
HUB 14 is an innovative dance rehearsal and performance space. Home to Meagan O’Shea, Ame Henderson, Jen Johnson and Jacob Zimmer, and facilitating some of the city’s most exciting new performance making.
Self-Solo Creation:
a workshop with Meagan O'Shea
Nationally acclaimed interdisciplinary dance artist Meagan O'Shea is best known for her self-solo work. She has developed this workshop from her creative process on her solos something blue - "clever and cunning, with lots of twists and turns for the imagination" (Paula Citron), and Coffee for One.
This workshop creates many possible maps for navigating the creative process, and exploring different ways to incorporate interdisciplinary elements in a movement-based performance piece.
The workshop will explore movement creation and choreography techniques. Accessing one's personalized physical language is vital to this work. Using improvisation techniques, dance ideas, theatrical elements, physical and geographic brainstorms, poetic and imagistic writings, the workshop will explore how to support one's own vision in making work.
This workshop is open to performance makers of all kinds who are interested in using physicality as a part of their process.

We’ll tell you what neighbourhoods & campuses we need help with. We are looking to start postering most areas around the week of June 18th – exact dates are flexible.
The Outreach Rep would check back once a week to replace any badly damaged or missing posters and relay any feedback from merchants as well as keep us abreast of any community events of interest. If you have an area you’d like to suggest, let us know as well. As an added incentive this year, anyone who completes any pre-festival shifts will be able to pick-up their stamps when they register at the start of the festival.
· Booking Shifts: As usual, we request that volunteers book a minimum of three shifts. Shifts are four to five hours in length on average. As a volunteer you will receive a Fringe 2007 T-shirt. You will also receive a complimentary stamp on your Volunteer Comp Card to see a Fringe play for each shift worked. Volunteers who work late night shifts or shifts longer than five hours at a time will receive two complimentary stamps per each such shift.
· Billets: We need friendly Torontonians who can billet performers between July 1st and July 17th to help with their accommodation needs. If you are able to offer a performer some living space during their stay in Toronto, you will receive a VIP 6 pass and our eternal gratitude!! All this in addition to the fun and excitement of getting acquainted with some very talented Fringe stars!
We hope you are ready and interested to volunteer again this year at the Toronto Fringe! Please give us a call at the office or come down in person (Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm) to book your volunteer shifts. Our phone number is (416) 966-1062. The Fringe office is located at 344 Bloor Street West, Suite 208. That’s half a block West of Spadina & Bloor (Spadina subway station).
If you have any friends or family that would also be interested in volunteering with the Fringe, tell them to give us a call or drop us an email and we’ll get them set-up and registered. The Fringe is always looking for fun-loving and dependable volunteers! Please note that any volunteers under the age of 16 will need to fill-out a permission form, which we’ll be happy to provide.
On a final note, we here at the Fringe value feedback, so if you have any comments to share with us from your experiences last year, don’t be shy!
