The School of TDT welcomes Andrea Vagianos

The School of Toronto Dance Theatre is delighted to announce that Andrea Vagianos will join the School as General Manager in June 2007.

Andrea Vagianos was educated at the University of Toronto and attained a B.A. in Drama and Classical Civilization and an M.A. in the History of Art. In 1989, after completing her coursework for a Ph.D. in art history, Vagianos spent a year in Washington, D.C., where she worked in the Fine Print Department of the Library of Congress cataloguing prints, and at The Phillips Collection researching the work of French artist Georges Rouault. When she returned to Toronto in 1990, she decided to change professional paths and pursue a career in arts management.

Vagianos has held a variety of positions in the cultural sector over the past seventeen years. She was Education Coordinator at the Shaw Festival in the 1991-1992 season; Assistant Producer of First Night Toronto '94; Education Coordinator at the Canadian Opera Company 1994-97; and Arts Programme Coordinator at the Laidlaw Foundation 1997-2000.

Vagianos was Managing Director of Dancemakers from August 2000 until August 2005, during which time she helped the organization eliminate its accumulated deficit and increase its earned and raised income. In addition to producing the company's annual Toronto productions and coordinating its touring engagements, she negotiated and managed the company's move to and leasehold improvements of Dancemakers Centre for Creation in the Distillery Historic District. Most recently, she held the position of Acting Arts Education Officer at the Ontario Arts Council from August 2006 through May 2007.

Andrea Vagianos can be reached at the School at 416-967-6887 or by e-mail at andreav@SchoolofTDT.org .

The Summer Institute 2007 Announced

Cultural Careers Council Ontario (CCCO) in conjunction with Genovese, Vanderhoof & Associates and the Centre for cultural Management, University of Waterloo announces the 2007 Summer Institute. The Summer Institute is a comprehensive professional training program for a career in fund-raising and marketing in the cultural sector. It is specifically designed for arts professionals and those who have a genuine interest in developing a career in arts marketing and fundraising. The Institute is a 3-week classroom training experience in a residential setting and it is held at the Centre for Cultural Management, University of Waterloo. This summer it will begin on Monday July 30th and run until Friday August 17th.

There is a dramatic lack of trained arts fund-raising and marketing personnel in the Canadian marketplace. Trained and experienced cultural fundraisers and marketers are in short supply and high demand. Former graduates of the Summer Institute now hold senior management positions both in and out of the cultural sector.

The course of studies at the Institute, coordinated by Genovese and Vanderhoof includes marketing (i.e. market research; subscriptions; philosophy and techniques; pricing; budgeting; target marketing; advertising; direct response; sales promotions; single ticket/event promotions; staffing and departmental structures and more) and fund-raising (i.e. corporate, foundation, and individual; prospect research; sponsorship and philanthropic selling techniques; patron fund-raising, membership programs and mega-gift programs; proposal writing; fund-raising data base management; annual operating, capital, and endowment campaign and more).

The faculty for the Institute is drawn from leading professionals in the North American cultural industry. Participants spend their days in class, hearing lectures from faculty and guest faculty, and in the evenings and on weekends there are group activities planned: field trips to cultural events across southern Ontario (i.e. theatre outings to Stratford Festival, Blyth Festival, a trip to St. Jacob’s Market, the Clay and Glass Gallery in Waterloo, a tour of Centre in the Square in Kitchener, and more). It is an exhausting but stimulating 3 weeks, full of learning and networking. Graduates become lifelong friends and colleagues. The graduates receive a Fundraising and Marketing for the Arts certificate from the Centre for Cultural Management, University of Waterloo on completion of the course.

For more information and to download a registration form go to our website at www.workingculture.ca <http://www.workingculture.ca> . Deadline to register is June 28, 2007.

Workshop is open to professional dancers and dance students in their final 2 years of a professional dance training program.

The workshop will start with a Release Technique warm-up, focusing on support from the bone structure, avoidance of the use of superficial muscles and how isolated movement initiation can bring the body into movement. These concepts are important in the phrase material that we will be learning.

The workshop will focus on a part of the "men's material" of "Rain". This material is mostly danced by the men in the original version, but by no means exclusively. It is dynamic with lots of organic "juicy" connections.

After learning the phrase material, we will create a new choreography based on one of the compositional structures used in "Rain". The structure deals with differences in speed, retrograde movement sequences and counterpoint.

Bring along a pen and a piece of paper, although you will probably end up writing down your arm in true Rosas style!

Structure is a fundamental element of Anne Teresa De Keermaeker's work and it is most often rooted in the music - in this case, the emotive minimalist composition of Steve Reich's Music for Eighteen Musicians. The challenge for any performer is to be able to "live" within the structure.

After the workshop, join Clinton in a discussion of life as a dance artist living and working in Europe. The discussion will take the form of a question-and-answer session.

Biography:
Clinton Stringer was born and raised in South Africa. During his university studies there, he performed with the First Physical Theatre Company in works by South African choreographer Jeannette Ginslov and Claire Baker of the Laban Centre. After graduating, he moved to Belgium to attend P.A.R.T.S. Where his teachers were, among others, Lance Gries (Trisha Brown), Elizabeth Corbett (Frankfurt Ballet), Joanne Saunier (Rosas), Janet Panetta and David Zambrano. He left the school to work for Joachim Schlomer (Theater Basel) on the production La Guerra d'Amore. Since 2000, Clinton has worked for Rosas (Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker). He has been involved in the creations of In Real Time, Rain, April Me, Bitches Brew, Kasandra, Raga for the Rainy Season, D'un Soir un Jour and the Steve Reich Evening. While working for Rosas, Clinton has taught many repertory workshops worldwide as well as teaching during auditions for Rosas.

Calls to Artists

Bridget Sparkle Productions
freeSTYLE - DJ Dance Crew Competition

"You're about to experience something so cold…"

The 2007 Global Hip Hop Festival (held by Harbourfront Centre July 27th-29th), will be hosting a crazy competition called "freeSTYLE" involving 1 DJ and… nope not 1 emcee this time, but 1 Dance Crew. That's right, each dance crew will have their own DJ who will mix their music live and they will compete to stay in the competition, the dancers and the DJ together as a team!

Bridget Sparkle Productions is looking for interested registrants:

What you need collectively as a team to enter:
A dance crew
A DJ
A routine involving at least 2 "styles" of dance (4 minutes max.)
Practice and lots of it (just playing, well not really bring your "A" game)
Free-styling skills
Originality

How it will run:
1st round – Each Team gets a chance to perform their live routine piece (4 minutes max.)

Next round - Weakest Teams from 1st round are eliminated and remaining Teams battle it out with 1-minute freestyle sessions to stay in the competition

…and so it will go each round knocking out competitors until we end up with a winner!
Remember this is a team effort so both the Dance Crew and the DJ will be judged on their skills.
(Guest judges to be announced at later date.)

Email info@bridgetandsparkle.ca to register, or download the form from our site http://www.bridgetandsparkle.ca .

This exciting new curated event features finished works in a casual theatre environment; a platform for the exchange of thoughts, ideas, and feedback between audience and artists. Crowder has always been a spearhead in the independent community regarding the presentation of original dance-based work that is polished and raw, with a ‘grass roots’ edge. Her past production/co-production credits include: Before During After – Festival of Duets, CRAVE, Series 8:08, and A Moment of INERTIA.
