DUO Workshop
Dance in Education:
A Workshop on Teaching Dance within the Classroom
For dance artists who are interested in working with youth in schools, but are unsure how to go about the logistics of doing this. This workshop gives participants dynamic tools to work creatively and effectively with a range of ages. Best practices in working with teachers, art programming staff and administrative staff within the school system will also be addressed. This workshop will be lead by Michelle Silagy, who has years of experience working with youth in schools across Ontario.
Cost: $30 for General Public
Lunch is not included with this seminar.
August 9, 2006
9:30 to 3:30
at The National Ballet School Of Canada, 404 Jarvis St., Toronto
Registration:
Call 416.504.6429 x23
Or email jessica@danceumbrella.net
Space is limited so register early
A follow-up in school workshop will occur in the fall. This will allow for artists to take what they have learned and use it in a practical situation. It is recommended that artists interested in working in schools take BOTH workshops.
Michelle Silagy is a Toronto-based independent dancer, choreographer, and teacher.
Her extensive work with youth and her choreographic work which she makes in the company of Canada’s illustrious independent dance artists sustains her desire to discover creative origins within artists of all disciplines through collaboration in dance. Michelle’s choreography is a unique blend of movement vocabularies, with an overarching goal to portray the beauty of the human form - leaving audiences feeling refreshed and inspired.
Her choreography Watermark: Visible when held against light, created with interpreters: Barbara Pallomina, Megan Andrews, Danielle Baskerville and Darryl Tracy, premiered in April 2003 at the Winchester Street Theatre. “Silagy builds her choreography around gentle but precise finger and hand movements, layered with controlled, loose-limbed physicality emanating gracefully from the rest of the body in an elegant flow of movement. Her themes are abstract into which one can read many meanings… Silagy’s work is a paean to humankind’s fragility in a cruel world.” Paula Citron (The Globe and Mail)
Michelle crafts work for intimate theatres and unconventional settings. Her work spanning 17 years, has been presented at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Dance Works at du Maurier Theatre Centre, The Textile Museum of Canada, Spring Rites, Dusk Dances, fFIDA, festivals throughout the country, and at Series 8:08, which she co-founded. Silagy is the inaugural recipient of the Toronto Dance Award for choreography from the Toronto Community Foundation. Michelle along with interpreters Andrea Nann and Megan Andrews is developing a new work, Surface Symbol as funded by The Toronto Arts Council and the Ontario Arts Council. As well she is creating a solo with and for Jennifer Lynn Dick.
A graduate of The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, she directs their Young Dancers’ Program and teaches pedagogy. Through The Royal Conservatory of Music’s Learning Through the Arts Program she combines movement with core curricula and composes written material, which introduce dance as compliment to multiple learning styles. Through the Conservatory, Silagy has collaborated with teachers throughout the country, most recently Manitoba. As well she has developed movement incentives at The Bloorview MacMillan Center Lab School where children with Cerebral Palsy are integrated into a classroom setting. Specialists regarded her work there as a Learning Through the Arts Artist as being highly innovative.

MENAKA THAKKAR WORKSHOP
AUGUST 8th ˆ AUGUST 12th
Tuesday to Friday from 12 to 2pm
Young Centre for the Performing Arts,
the Distillery Historic District
Classical Indian Dance Workshop
30-35 students
Menaka Thakkar will present a teaching workshop on the classical Indian dance style known as Bharatanatyam designed for dance students with training and coordination in Ballet or Modern.
The program is based on the model Menaka has used for the National Ballet School that consists of the following:
Lecture/Demo ˆ
The program begins with a talk on the history of classical Indian dance in relation to western dance forms.
Menaka will discuss the similarities and differences between the dance forms with regard to how the body is used and then demonstrate the Bharatnatyam dance style with its equal emphasis on the narrative (or mimetic) and pure dance.
Workshop -
Menaka will teach the basic exercises of Indian dance to attain the movements that are unique to Bharatnatyam.
Since many of the dancers in this workshop have trained bodies for ballet or modern technique, the process of learning Bharatnatyam technique becomes teaching the class new movements using the same basic principles of body positioning.
The exercises will be followed by the teaching of the movements that are special to Bharatnatyam.
This will include the basic steps, neck and eye movements, language of hand gestures, the facial expressions and the basic concept of rhythms and choreography.
Performance ˆ
In the final two days of workshops, Menaka will teach the students 2 dance routines from the repertoire
About Menaka Thakkar:
Menaka Thakkar is an internationally renowned dancer, choreographer and teacher working in three Classical forms of Indian dance: Bharatanatyam, Odissi and Kuchipudi.
Recipient of an honorary D.Litt. degree from York University for her varied contributions to dance, this multi-faceted dance artist has always been a pioneer in all aspects of Indian dance in Canada-performance, choreography, teaching, research, and institution building.
Her choreography spans a wide range: from stunning solo numbers to elaborate productions of dance dramas and from pure traditional dance to contemporary works involving fusion of dance styles.

Repertory workshop 2006: Korean Confucian Dance
with Hak-sun LIM,
>From 26 October to 4 November,
in residency at the Royaumont Abbey
Up to and including the year 2005, the Repertory Workshop has been devoted to the study of works by important choreographers who have strongly influenced the development of modern and contemporary dance in Europe and the United States.
As of 2006, and for a 3 year period, the CRCC is opening the notion of repertory to include ancient dances from other cultures. This series is devoted to traditional ritual dances from Asia, a heritage passed on through generations via the oral tradition of direct personal contact: ritual as dance, dance as ritual.
In 2006, the workshop is devoted to Confucian Korean dances and will be directed by Hak-sun LIM <http://www.royaumont.com/fondation_abbaye/?id=767#1938> , a choreographer, dancer, and great specialist of Confucian dances (click on her name in the Royaumont website to read more about her).
As is often, tradition can be a means of questioning modern concerns and in this case, a possible source for renewing choreographic propositions of contemporary dance today. The workshop considers one or more dances of a chosen tradition, period and style taking into account various identifying factors:
the context determining that the dance is ritual by nature, the history of the form and style, an analysis of the construction of the dance(s), a study of the relationships to music, costumes, masks, objects used, the place where the dance is presented and/or other factors important to the particular style.
The workshop is open to 8 experienced dancers, choreographers or dance teachers particularly interested in dance experiences from Asia as a means of inquiring aspects of contemporary dance.
All participants live in residency at the Royaumont abbey, with individual rooms.
A public presentation of the work accomplished will be presented on Saturday 4 November at 5:00 pm.
Applications can be sent to the Centre for Choreographic Research and Composition 21 Septembre 2006 at :
CRCC, à la Fondation Royaumont, 95270 Asnières-sur-Oise, France.

She moved to New York City and formed Molissa Fenley and Dancers in 1977.

During her first ten years (1977-1987) she focused on presenting group works, performed by herself and an ensemble of dancers.
In the second ten years (1987-1997) her work shifted to solo performances created in collaboration with contemporary visual artists and composers.
Now, in another cycle, she is once again exploring the dynamics of ensemble work.

Second call for Performing Artists
The Caribou Project
Art, Spirituality and Social Justice
A project by St. Philip the Apostle Anglican Church
A unique art project is being undertaken by The Anglican Church of St. Philip the Apostle in the Bathurst / Lawrence area of Toronto.
The church is using a bequest for the selection of artists in different disciplines to create new works specifically for St. Philip the Apostle Church. The pieces will express the themes of spirituality and social justice. Chosen work may also reflect different sub-themes based on but not specific to the Anglican liturgy as listed below.
The project welcomes performing artists from all faith communities as well as performing artists with a non-faith based approach to spirituality.
This second call is for performing artists only. There was an initial call in May which attracted a strong visual art field; we are now targeting the performing arts more directly.
Art submissions can be from any performing art discipline: music, dance, theatre, spoken word, video and multi-disciplinary work that includes performing arts
- Both individual and artist collectives/companies will be considered.
- They must be from the GTA area
- If selected they must create a new original work specifically for the Caribou Project
- See below for submission details
- The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, August 1, 3 pm.
- A jury of art professionals and members of the congregation will select the work and artists will be notified in early September, 2006
- The chosen artists will discuss with the project committee the timing, final fee (including budget) for the presentation of the work
The aims of the project are for the church to reach out to its broader community, both the local neighbourhood and the wider population of Toronto through this collaborative undertaking; and to support the creation of artwork that will be of lasting value to the membership of the church, artists and the city. The project will encourage debate and dialogue among artists, parishioners and audiences about the nature of art and its expression of spirituality and social justice.
The first performance presentation will be in early 2007 and the project continues until the beginning of 2008. The project also includes visual art presentations and the first of these will take place in November 2006.
Chosen artists will be expected to meet together and with the congregation on occasion.
Performance(s) at the church will be free to audiences. St. Philips will not ask for proceeds of any initial performance after the Caribou Project; but asks that 2% of ticket sales for any second and third performances go to the church as a donation to its social justice projects. The artists/group of artists will in addition receive fees for the Caribou Project work ranging between $2,000 and $8,000 depending on the nature of the work. Specific fees will be negotiated with the chosen artists.
The art presentations will be displayed or performed in the church, including its space of worship and during regular church services. Artists are asked to respect the worship practices of the congregation.
Chosen artists will have ample opportunity to view this space. Artists should note that the church is open to the public and unsupervised. The church will have limited liability for the work on display and the performances held within its premises subject to legal consultation.
Conditions for applying:
1 The call is open to all artists within the GTA
2 The artist or collective must submit:
· Up to 10 well-labelled visuals of no more than 10 recent, relevant works. This could be slides, high-quality definition digital images on CD, text, good quality printed photographs, DVD or video (if appropriate) along with a separate, printed list of titles, materials, dimensions and locations for each work.
· One page artist’s statement about her/his/their art practice.
· One page describing the general concept and theme of the artist’s proposed creation, including a statement why this is appropriate for the Caribou Project and in general terms how it would be achieved. Please indicate how it meets the main themes of the project.
o It must include a rough estimate of the budget, itemizing known costs
· Résumé (maximum three pages)
· Names, titles and contact information of two references
· Adequately stamped, self-addressed envelope for return of materials
3 All applications must be sent by mail, courier or delivered in person to:

135 Adelaide Street East
Toronto, ON M5C 1L8
Office hours: Tuesday till Thursdays, 8:30 - 3:00pm
4. Submissions must be received by 3:00 p.m., August 1, 2006
5 The jury will review all submissions by early September. Chosen artists will be notified and invited to the church to view the space and meet the Caribou Project committee at the end of September. At this time, the dates for each art presentation will be mutually agreed upon.
The Caribou Project has been initiated by Robin Pacific and is coordinated by Penny Bateman. If further information is required, please notify Penny at pennykb@sympatico.ca
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
"UN/Settled Multiculturalisms"
A Space
Deadline: July 31, 2006
A Space Gallery is currently seeking submissions for our 2007/2008 programming season on the current politics of multiculturalism and representation in the arts.
Countries such as Canada and Australia have been formally self-designated as multicultural states for decades.
Throughout the '80s and '90s, diverse artists gained visibility within mainstream arts, yet their work remains largely under-represented. Assumptions of Western authority, modernist aesthetics, and racist mythologies continue to push artists from different cultures and environments into opposing positions.
Do artists make their work in response to the values and expectations of Western curators and audiences?
How do artists and curators make room for ethnic or national, individual, collective as well as cross-cultural subjectivities?
What do multiculturalist agendas offer artists in the 21st century?
The Gallery seeks proposals in all media from local, national and international artists and curators who offer challenging viewpoints on these issues, incorporating diverse and innovative approaches that explore the definition and boundaries of "community" and "culture."
We are interested in ways that artists and curators can create a space for different readings or experiences of culture and identity, and in multidisciplinary projects that create a forum for dialogue and collaboration between diverse communities, including youth cultures and communities in transition.
All submissions must include:
- CV(s)
- One page project description, specifying spatial and technical needs
- One page Artist or Curatorial Statement
- Support material: slides ~ max. 10 or digital images on CD, clearly identified; max. of 1 VHS tape or 1 DVD, clearly identified
- Descriptive list for visual material (title, date, dimension, medium)
- SASE (Self Addressed Stamped Envelope) ~ Please ensure correct postage.
Please send your proposal by July 31, 2006 to:
A Space Gallery
401 Richmond Street West,
Suite 110,
Toronto, ON

Please note that email applications are not accepted.
A Space is not responsible for lost or damaged submissions.
Do not send original slides, artwork or master tapes.
A Space pays artist fees according to CARFAC standards.
For information call 416-979-9633.
