Grassroots Archiving Travel Assistance
I'm pleased to announce that Dance Collection Danse has received funding through the Flying Squad program at the Canada Council for the Arts to assist participants with travel costs in order to attend the next Grassroots Archiving workshop.

Grassroots Archiving
A National Preservation Strategy for Dance
Toronto, March 5-7, 2008

The Grassroots Archiving Strategy has created a network of trained Dance Collections Coordinators in cities across Canada to help dance artists and companies preserve their legacies.

These freelance Dance Collections Coordinators are able to address two needs within the dance community: (1) to perform archival duties for artists and companies who do not have the time to preserve their materials, and (2) to provide artists and companies with training and consultation that enables them to attend to their own preservation needs.

The next Grassroots Archiving workshop, "Everyday Archiving for Small and Mid-sized Companies", will be held March 5-7, 2008 in Toronto. This collaborative workshop will bring in expertise from Dance Collection Danse, The National Ballet of Canada, Danny Grossman Dance Company and the Winnipeg Dance Preservation Initiative. Targeting arts managers, creators and interpreters, this workshop will help companies and artists incorporate archiving into their daily operations. Participants will learn how to manage an archiving project, how to create a budget and how to perform various techniques to preserve documents, three-dimensional objects and choreography.

Biographies:

Lainie Towell Soumah aka Sufi Girl is an independent dance artist and producer in Ottawa, who specializes in Guinean dance. She travels to Guineé Conakry to dance regularly with Le Troupe Bassikolo de Kaloum and is particularly curious about how Guinean dance transforms when taken out of its traditional context. In 2008, Sufi Girl will celebrate her 5th year teaching in Ottawa. To date, she has shared her enthusiasm for Guinean dance with over one thousand people through her classes, workshops and production projects.

Dr Lee: Known to Ottawa audiences as Dr Lee, Lee Garbutt is a professional musician with over 15 years of experience as a freelance percussion artist. Garbutt has a very contemporary approach to West African drumming, and his musical interests include both present-day and traditional styles. He composes pieces on the djembé drum that feature his original solos and arrangements, blended with electronics to create a unique world beat sound.

Akra Soumah: A native of Guinea Conakry who has just immigrated to Ottawa Canada, Akra has a lifetime association with West African drumming from The Republic of Guinea. His high level of mastery of this indigenous rhythmic art form is rare in Canada. A specialist on doundoun drums, the greater part of Soumah’s training and performance experience was with the private ballet troupe Bassikolo under the direction of Djibril Morlaye Camara, a renowned Master who has trained many artists that went on to become international successes with Guinea’s National Ballet troupes Les Ballets Africains and Ballet Djoliba.

'Free the Body' Yoga/Movement workshop

Host: Tanya Crowder
Date: Saturday, January 19, 2008
Time: 5:00pm - 7:00pm

Location: The Union Yoga Centre - 242 Carlton St. (at Parliament), Toronto, ON

Contact Info
Phone: 416-556-0347
Email: howdaresheproductions@gmail.com

Workshop:

Both dance and yoga are practices of 'movement as meditation' and provide a means to connecting us to and strengthening the body, the mind and the spirit.

Yoga/Movement Fusion is a fun, energetic class, promoting proper alignment and ease of movement through the muscles and joints, as well as incorporating strengthening elements. These classes are designed to help the participant listen to their body to find awareness and healing, leading to an overall feeling of inner youthfulness and peace.

The class is built from a fusion of yoga postures, modern dance, release technique, and various movement improvisation practices.

We will be exploring the use and importance of the breath with movement, and the building of an awareness of how the joints and
muscles work and can move and exist in yoga postures with buoyancy, ease and a sense of grounding and strength. Yoga/Movement Fusion has an element of freedom for the practitioner to move in any way that suits their body and experience; through their own exploration, as well as through clearly articulated and guided postures and movement sequences that will work for all levels. Beginning from a soft and meditative place discovering the inherent intelligence of the body, flowing naturally to a
vigorous sequence of postures and movements that will make us sweat! The final moments of the class will consist of a meditative savasana (resting posture) to reflect and to release any tension.

Tanya provides a safe and comfortable atmosphere for all levels of experience with both dance and yoga, allowing everyone to move at their own pace and to explore their own creativity. A work out and a freeing experience all in one!

This workshop will be accompanied by ambient music to create an ambient atmosphere for us to work in.

PRIDECAB APPLICATIONS
The deadline for applying to take part in Pride Cab 2008 is February 15!

Pride Cab is The Buddies in Bad Times Theatre Queer Youth Programme year-end show: a collectively-created, cabaret-style
extravaganza, written and performed by the participants and directed by Evalyn Parry.

Performed on the main stage at Buddies, previous shows have been a sold-out, standing-o kick-off to Buddies Pride Festivities…don’t miss taking part this year!

No previous theatre experience is necessary to participate. The Buddies Youth Programme looks for queer-identified young
people (between 15 and 25 years old) who want to participate in making an original show about queer identity and queer history.

Creation/rehearsals take place Monday and Wednesday nights, 6 to 10 pm, from April 2 to June 18. Final performance is June 20th.

Through a series of workshops and interactive events with seasoned, queer activists and artists, we’ll explore both the history of queer culture in our city as well as the realities of what it means to be young and queer today. We’ll use theatre, music, dance, writing, storytelling and performance art to create a show based on what we discover.

The Pride Cab project is a truly unique opportunity for young, aspiring artists to talk to the older generation of the queer community; to meet like-minded peers, learn new skills, and to create and showcase original work on Buddies main stage.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION IS FEB 15.

Download your application on-line at http://www.artsexy.ca/youth_pridecab.cfm
We will meet with and interview selected applicants.

Best of luck!

classical ballet technique. The audition will include class, pointe work for ladies, pas de deux and repertoire.

Auditions

* Who should audition?
Once a year The National Ballet of Canada holds a Company audition in Toronto. It is intended for established dancers who have performing experience with a professional company. Interested candidates must have strong classical ballet technique.

There are a limited number of positions available each contract year with The National Ballet of Canada. Due to Canadian Immigration requirements, positions are mainly offered to Canadians. This does not preclude the taking on of foreign talent, but it makes the auditions process extremely competitive.

If you are a dancer with little or no professional experience, please click here http://www.national.ballet.ca/about.php?auditions/apprentice for information on our RBC Apprentice Programme auditions.

* Contract Dates?
The likely start date for a new Company member would be August 2008 and the length of the contract would be variable.

* When is the next Company audition? And what should I expect?
The 2008/2009 Company audition will take place on Sunday March 30, 2008 at 10:00am, (doors open at 8:30am). The audition will
include class, pointe work for ladies, pas de deux and company repertoire. Please note that dancers may be eliminated from the audition process at any time during the audition. The audition is expected to end by 2:00pm on Sunday March 30.
Successful applicants, and all auditionees who were not eliminated, will be notified 4 - 6 weeks after the audition.

* How to apply for an audition space?
Please email, mail or fax your resume, email address and photos (one head shot and one dance shot) no later than March 20, 2008,

NATIONAL CIRCUS SCHOOL IS RECRUITING!

Audition Tour for the best talent in the country

Internationally known as one of the leading institutions in the world for the highest-quality professional training in its field, the National Circus School hits the road the month of February 2008 in search of the best talent in the country! The Montreal-based School, unique in North America, offers young people who aspire to become circus performers a chance to combine training with an academic education. In February 2008, the School will hold auditions in Toronto, Vancouver and Montréal. Auditions are by appointment only, and the deadline to apply is midnight, January 18, 2008.

More than 140 students from around the world currently attend the National Circus School. "The interaction between faculty and students, who all come from very diverse backgrounds and nationalities, creates an extremely rich environment in which to explore the circus arts," says Anna Ward, a School graduate who is now part of the latest creation by Cirque Éloize.

Upon completing training at the National Circus School, graduates of the higher education programs quickly receive offers from the world's leading circus companies including, of course, Cirque du Soleil. In fact, more than 95% of graduates find employment in the first weeks following completion of their studies. "The creative confidence this school instilled in me serves me well today with my own circus company," says Patrick Léonard, a graduate of the School and co-founder of the 7 Fingers collective, whose shows Traces and Le Loft have been lauded around the world.

The audition, also called the Entrance Examination, determines a candidate's potential aptitude and capacity to successfully complete a program. It consists of a series of tests of physical and artistic aptitude to evaluate candidates' potential and skills, as well as their ability to complete the program. Young people wishing to register for the audition/examination may come from any one of these backgrounds: gymnastics, dance, acrosport, diving, figure skating, martial arts or, of course, circus arts! The auditions are mandatory for entry into all
programs.

National Circus School programs are designed to provide students with a well-rounded education. The National Circus School provides complete professional training in circus arts, from preparatory training to high school and college-level programs. It also offers two college diploma programs for circus arts teachers. A summer camp for young people between 9 and 17 years of age serves to introduce them to professional training while sampling circus life at the School. And, with the fall 2008 session, the School will be able to provide complete dormitory services for its students.

To be considered for the February 2008 auditions, held consecutively in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal, candidates are required to send an Application Form before the January 18, 2008 midnight deadline. For a complete description of the audition process and registration forms, or further information about the School and its programs: http://www.nationalcircusschool.ca , or info@enc.qc.ca , or toll free 1-800-267-0859.

Heather Stants is a life long artist and dancer with a degree in photography and fine arts. Her explorations in tribal bellydance
began over eleven years ago when she became the assistant director of Read My Hips* http://www.readmyhips.com in Chicago,
Illinois. In 1999 Heather moved to San Diego, California and formed Urban Tribal Dance Company. Heather's diverse movement and arts background feeds her creativity and her innovative approach to choreography. Urban Tribal Dance Company is known for its contemporary approach to the dance, a pared down costume emphasizing body movements over ornamentation, athleticism and the use of the dance form as a means of personal expression and interpretation. Their creativity has twice earned them the title of "Troupe of the Year" in Zaghareet! Magazine's Golden Belly Awards. In addition to teaching several weekly classes in San Diego since 1999, Heather Stants and Urban Tribal Dance Company have been touring extensively since 2004 sharing their love of modern tribal bellydance with dancers in the U.S. and abroad.

Urban Tribal Dance Company is widely recognized as one of the top tribal fusion pioneers.
