Canada Council for the Arts / Dance Section

Reminder of the upcoming new deadline for the Grants to Dance Professionals on February 1, 2008. No late applications will be accepted.

It is very important to receive a complete application postmarked no later than February 1st.
The Dance Section will not accept incomplete applications -- including all required support material, e.g. video. We will not call for missing material. Incomplete applications are ineligible and will not be reviewed by the committee.

Applications and support material must be postmarked no later than the deadline. If the date falls on a weekend or statutory holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. Please note that no extension of the deadline will be granted.

Guidelines and application forms are currently available from the section or on our website. http://www.canadacouncil.ca/grants/dance/nc127245475245156250.htm Please review the program guidelines carefully before completing.

Some modifications have been made to the program:

  • Only one letter of support is required for emerging dance professionals (not required for mid-career or established dance professionals).
  • Letters of support must be submitted with the application on February 1st – letters arriving after the deadline will not be accepted.
  • Research projects must be stand-alone activities, not directly related to particular creations or productions
  • Ineligible activities now include commissions (refer to Production Project Grants)

The Canada Council for the Arts would like to remind you of the Final Report Policy.

Applicants will not be eligible to apply to the Canada Council for further assistance until all final reports on all completed projects have been submitted to the Canada Council and approved by the program officer. This also applies to any other final reports due to programs in other Sections of the Council. This means that any new applications to the Canada Council
will not be accepted if you have any outstanding reports.

If you are planning to apply to one of our upcoming deadlines, please ensure that all previous reports have been received in all Sections concerned.

It is important to note we will not accept final reports that are sent with a new application. All reports are to be mailed separately and in advance of the deadline. The policy states that all final reports are to be received and approved before we receive a new application. We will not accept final reports by email or by fax.

If you need to make an extension to your project end date, please fill out the Final Report Due Date Extension Form, which can be found on our website:

Workshop is open to professional dancers and dance students in their final two years of a professional dance training program
only.

Technique Class:
Marc Boivin offers a comprehensive contemporary dance class composed from the pedagogical material of the Limon technique and some principles of ballet. Using the traditional progression of a centre class, the dancer is challenged to develop an equilibrium between strength and the free released weight of momentum; the clarity of impulse within, and the outward relationship to space through form and focus.

In the process, technique is defined as the appropriation of tools in order to physically articulate the artistic contribution of the dancer through his/her choices.
Through the technical work, participants focus on understanding the science of these chosen traditional technique sources while articulating the mechanics of movement within their own physical systems. The work has many purposes among which:

- The safety and health of the body as it is developed beyond its daily use to a higher level of efficiency and expressivity;
- The understanding of a personal physical system inherent to our dancing, something to be first accepted, then challenged and developed;
- The appropriation of a mode of expression in all its parameters;
- An expanded range of possibilities and a higher sensitivity through a heightened vitality within the body.

Improvisation:
Improvisation relies on a balance between skill and instinct, between and ability to stimulate one's inspiration, hear it and build the confidence to give this inspiration an uncensored form. Improvisation work simultaneously develops the passionate involvement of the dancer and, at the same time, a certain detachment, a discernment that is a pivotal point of the artistic experience.

The improvisation workshop will be approached through experimentation with exercises, scores and performance tools drawn from different sources. The practice will be broken down into two perspectives: first as a research technique and then as a performance skill. Though both of these are related, varying nuances can and will be highlighted. The participants will be taken through a series of games, situations and task-solving challenges aimed at refining their skills, and deepening their commitment. Essential components of the work such as preparation, creative state of mind and composition will be addressed.

As a follow-up to this ATC, those who wish to push further into the process are invited to participate in an improvisation performance as part of the Series 8:08 Choreographic Performance Workshop on Saturday, February 23rd (one month later). This initiative is separate from the ATC but connected in as much as it will be a chance to pursue what will have been instigated during the weekend of the ATC workshop. Details will be discussed and set on the last hour of the workshop.

Marc Bovin:

"Boivin, in particular, enlivened the space (...) In his long poses that are part of the choreography, he's never static, but waiting, listening (...) for him, the abstract is a dynamic place that speaks about and doesn't ignore human essence."
Kaija Pepper, Dance International

Marc Bovin began his dance career at Le Groupe de la Place Royale (now Le Groupe Danse Lab) in Ottawa under the directorship of Peter Boneham. In 1985 he joined Ginette Laurin and her newly formed company O Vertigo Danse, touring extensively in festivals across Canada, the United States and Europe. Since 1991 he has worked as an independent dancer, performing in the company creations and/or the commissioned works of Sylvain Emard, Jean-Pierre Perreault, Catherine Tardif and Tedd Senmon Robinson. A teacher of technique and interpretation, he has been affiliated with LADMMI, a professional training program in Montreal since 1987 and regularly guest teaches in schools and companies across Canada. An avid improviser, Boivin has been researching and performing this form since 1992 more specifically with Andrew Harwood, Peter Bingham and Helen Walkley. He is the 1999 recipient of the Jacqueline Lemieux prize, awarded each year by the Canada Council for the Arts. More recent p! rojects have included the conception of RAFT 70, an improvisation evening presented in Montreal in January 2007 and the creation of FRAGMENT #1, for Quebec company, Code Universel. Bovin took a leave of absence from regular activities in Canada during the spring and summer of 2007 to work on a special project in Holland with choreographers Sylvain Emard and Andre Gingras, "7x2", a site-specific event including 7 male dancers from different origins.

Khmer Dance Traditions (classical dance from Cambodia)
with Peter Chin, Yim Savann and Phon Sopheap

Saturday January 12
and
Sunday January 13
10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

National Ballet School, 400 Jarvis Street, concourse studio
Cost: $60 or $35/day

For more information and to register please call: 416-593-8455 or e-mail info@tribalcracklingwind.ca

Yim Savann and Phon Sopheap are two of the most prominent male classical dancers of their generation in Cambodia. Together they
share a wealth of movement vocabulary and dance ethos that will form the basis of this workshop.

Both Savann and Sopheap have worked extensively with dancers and other artists from all over the world. The knowledge they have gained from these collaborations has given them a clear direction for presenting and transposing the Khmer dance traditions. Far from only teaching Khmer dance technique, Savann and Sopheap will join with Toronto choreographer Peter Chin to guide the participants in using Khmer dance technique to generate movement of their own in a creative situation that respects both the body sourced movement sensibility of the participant, and the Khmer dance sources. There will also be video segments shown of classical Khmer dance and daily life of artists in Cambodia to give context to the movement workshop.

Sopheap is a specialist in the monkey role from the famous classical Khmer Ballet. This role is known for its athletic physicality and cunning imitation of primate behaviour turned into dance. Savann is a specialist in the ogre/giant roles, known for its elegance and line as well as its strong sculptural presence.

This workshop is open to anybody interested in dance, creative movement, Cambodian culture, the Ramayana and South East Asian culture in general.

Mime
with Adam Paolozza

"For me mime is an integral part of theatre, not a separate art form. The Mime which I love involves an identification with things in order to make them live, even when words are used." - Jacques Lecoq

What does it mean to mime? To mime is not just to put on white face paint and tights. Mime is the most basic tool of the actor. The Mime imitates the world around them to better understand it.

Inspired by the pedagogy of Jacques Lecoq and Etienne Decroux this workshop will focus on developing mime skills to enrich the creative imagination and physical expression of the actor. Through games, exercises and improvisations we will focus on the following: PHYSICAL CHARACTERISATION, SILENT PLAY, PHYSICAL COMEDY

The workshop will culminate in a small individual creation inspired by one of the areas covered in the workshop.

This workshop is suitable for performers of all levels and disciplines who are interested in building stronger physical awareness-balance, agility, clarity and precision of gesture, clarity of physical acting choices and exploring the expressive limits of the human body.

When: January 20 11-7pm; January 23 5:30-10pm; January 27 11-7pm

Where: Pia Bouman school for Creative Movement - 6 Noble St. (In Parkdale. Heading West on Queen St. it is the first street on your right hand side after the bridge near Dufferin St. Parking in the back)

Fee: $200 non-union; $160 union (ACTRA, CAEA, CADA)
Contact: Adam Paolozza at adampaolozza@gmail.com
*Space is limited so sign up early*

Adam Paolozza studied at Écoles Jacques Lecoq, trained with the Decroux company Intrepido and ThÃ=A9âtre de Complicité founder Jos Houben. In Toronto he trained with Canadian mime master Adrian Pecknold. He is a founding member and co-Artistic Director of the international ensemble TheatreRUN. NATIONAL CIRCUS SCHOOL IS RECRUITING!

Audition Tour for the best talent in the country

Internationally known as one of the leading institutions in the world for the highest-quality professional training in its field, the National Circus School hits the road the month of February
2008 in search of the best talent in the country! The Montreal-based School, unique in North America, offers young people who aspire to become circus performers a chance to combine
training with an academic education. In February 2008, the School will hold auditions in Toronto, Vancouver and Montréal. Auditions are by appointment only, and the deadline to apply is
midnight, January 18, 2008.

More than 140 students from around the world currently attend the National Circus School. "The interaction between faculty and students, who all come from very diverse backgrounds and nationalities, creates an extremely rich environment in which to explore the circus arts," says Anna Ward, a School graduate who is now part of the latest creation by Cirque Éloize.

Upon completing training at the National Circus School, graduates of the higher education programs quickly receive offers from the world's leading circus companies including, of course, Cirque du Soleil. In fact, more than 95% of graduates find employment in the first weeks following completion of their studies. "The creative confidence this school instilled in me serves me well today with my own circus company," says Patrick Léonard, a graduate of the School and co-founder of the 7 Fingers collective, whose shows Traces and Le Loft have been lauded around the world.

The audition, also called the Entrance Examination, determines a candidate's potential aptitude and capacity to successfully complete a program. It consists of a series of tests of physical and artistic aptitude to evaluate candidates' potential and skills, as well as their ability to complete the program. Young people wishing to register for the audition/examination may come from any one of these backgrounds: gymnastics, dance, acrosport, diving, figure skating, martial arts or, of course, circus arts! The auditions are mandatory for entry into all
programs.

National Circus School programs are designed to provide students with a well-rounded education. The National Circus School provides complete professional training in circus arts, from preparatory training to high school and college-level programs. It also offers two college diploma programs for circus arts teachers. A summer camp for young people between 9 and 17 years of age serves to introduce them to professional training while sampling circus life at the School. And, with the fall 2008 session, the School will be able to provide complete dormitory services for its students.

To be considered for the February 2008 auditions, held consecutively in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal, candidates are required to send an Application Form before the January 18, 2008 midnight deadline. For a complete description of the audition process and registration forms, or further information about the School and its programs: http://www.nationalcircusschool.ca , or info@enc.qc.ca , or toll free 1-800-267-0859.
