Newton will have his choice of grand prizes, which will be awarded at the DUO International Dance Day festival in Yonge-Dundas Square, April 27th, 2008. The Metcalf Foundation is pleased to present Opening Doors:
The First Five Years of the Metcalf Foundation’s Performing Arts Program.
Grant-makers all make important about what to support and how best to deliver that support. We all want to understand the impact of these choices – to determine if the decisions were well-made, and what resulted from our intervention. Are we making the difference we hope for? If not, what could we do to realize the full potential of our commitment and resources? These are challenging questions.
In 2001, the Metcalf Foundation launched a new and innovative performing arts program. Five years later, we undertook a review of this program – it
was the first time that our Foundation had ever embarked on a formal evaluative process. The review was completed between January and June 2006.
In Opening Doors, we describe the context for the arts program and the review process that we undertook. The paper also includes a brief summary of the evaluators’ report and recommendations, and what we learned about the Foundation’s work in the performing arts sector.
The document is available for download at the Foundation's website: http://www.metcalffoundation.com.
For further information, please contact Arts Program Director Michael Jones at 416-926-0366 X 25 or mjones@metcalffoundation.com.

ARTSCAPE HANDS OVER REIGN OF THE QUEEN WEST ART CRAWL
Artscape today announced that the Parkdale Liberty Economic Development Corporation (PLEDC) will assume ownership and production of the Queen West Art Crawl. The Queen West Art Crawl affectionately known as "QWAC" is an annual local festival of art and community that celebrates and enriches the unique cultural dynamic of Queen West and Parkdale - two of the city's most distinctive creative districts.
Susan Serran, Director of Community Development with Artscape views PLEDC as "the perfect home for the Queen West Art Crawl. With a mandate
committed to local economic development and capacity building, the Parkdale Liberty Economic Development Corporation is exceptionally well positioned to serve as a catalyst for the vital community-based dialogue, exchange and collaboration that the festival personifies for a wide range of partners and participants along Queen Street from Spadina to Roncesvalles."
Bill Squires, Executive Director with PLEDC commented "The Board of Directors and staff at PLEDC are extremely excited about this new venture and we can't wait to sink our teeth into it. We are also looking forward to working with all of the community partners who have made the Queen West Art Crawl such a great event over the past 5 years and also fostering new partnerships to assist us in growing the Queen West Art Crawl."
From the outset of the Queen West Art Crawl, one of Artscape's key objectives was to build the creative capacity across the participating communities in the hope that one of its event partners would be positioned to assume ownership and production of the event. Artscape views its role in the community as an idea incubator and catalyst for the development of new and evolving creative partnerships. After five enormously successful years, the Queen West Art Crawl has reached a level of independent recognition and stability and the time to turn the event over to another vital community organization has arrived. The Queen West Art Crawl involves a number of key community partners including the West Queen West BIA, the Parkdale Village BIA, The Gladstone Hotel, Urbanspace Properties, Workman Arts, and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).
Artscape launched the Queen West Art Crawl in 2003 as means to help anchor local creative and cultural resources in the community. Since then, it has evolved from a one-day outdoor art show and sale to a three-day multi-neighbourhood festival that speaks volumes about how art and artists, working together with local businesses and residents, make such an enormous contribution to our community. Over its first five years the Queen West Art Crawl has welcomed more than 100,000 visitors and members of the local community, showcased over 1,700 established and emerging artists working in every medium imaginable, and involved the creative efforts of more than 300 local business and community groups. Collectively, they have rolled out the
red carpet, and helped throw a party like no other in celebration of Queen Street West's creative edge.
We look forward to the sixth edition of the Queen West Art Crawl the weekend of September 12 - 14, 2008. For information on Queen West Art Crawl 2008 please visit: www.queenwestartcrawl.com
Canada Council
moving forward
cap sur l’avenir
I am pleased to announce that the Canada Council’s Action Plan 2008-11 is now available on our web site. The Plan describes the program and operational strategies the Council will pursue in the next three years and budgetary information for the upcoming fiscal year (2008-09). It explains how the Council has aligned its budget with its priority strategies and how it will allocate new funds totaling $31,500,000 in 2008-09. It follows the values and broad directions set out in the Strategic Plan 2008-11, published in October 2007, and has been informed by the largest and most extensive consultation in the Council’s history.
We extend our sincerest appreciation to all those both inside and outside the organization who contributed to this extraordinary planning process, and to the government of Canada for providing $30 million in new, recurring funds to translate the most strategic of these ideas into reality.
The Action Plan, the Strategic Plan and information about the consultations are available on our web site at www.canadacouncil.ca.
Yours sincerely,
Karen Kain, C.C.
Chair
Karen Kain, C.C.
Ontario Arts Council Strategic Planning Update
OAC’s comprehensive strategic planning process continues. The Ontario Arts Council hosted 26 consultations in several communities around the province from October to December 2007.
The sessions covered all art forms and included some specifically for the Aboriginal and francophone arts communities. (list of consultations below)
Preliminary Reports
The three consultants who facilitated these meetings, Decode, Equinox and Nanibush Innovations, have produced preliminary reports based on the consultations. These are rich with information about the realities and needs facing arts communities everywhere in Ontario.
We are having these translated and will be posting the reports on the OAC web site in the coming weeks so that the community can see and respond to major themes that have been identified. As soon as the draft reports are posted on our site, we will send out another Newsflash.
Discussions were wide-ranging and sometimes addressed issues that, although important, are not necessarily within the scope of OAC’s mandate.
One-on-one interviews
OAC will conduct one-on-one interviews with some individuals in the arts community and with representatives of other government agencies. We will also talk to people working in new immigrant communities, social services, education, and health.
Once these are completed, OAC staff will produce a draft strategic plan which will be presented to the OAC board of directors in April 2008.
The priorities that emerge will help OAC plan its directions and budgets over the next three years.
Future Directions and Program Budgets
In March 2007, the government announced a $15 million increase to OAC’s base funding over three years. As we stated last year, almost all arts sectors, including operating programs, will see a 30 per cent budget increase over the three year period from 2007/08 to 2009/10.
Many, but not all, organizations will see an increase to their operating grants over the three years if supported by assessment, including those in the midst of multi-year cycles. Individual project programs will also see increases.
If you have questions, please contact Kirsten Gunter, Director of Communications at kgunter@arts.on.ca or at 416-969-7403 / 1-800-387-0058 ext. 7403 (toll-free in Ontario). Ontario Arts Council Strategic Plan Consultation Sessions 2007

Dancemakers' Master Classes in Contemporary Technique with Matija Ferlin (Croatia)
Matija Ferlin (Pula, 1982) is a graduate of The School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam. He has presented and performed his own work in Croatia, Montenegro, Portugal, Germany, Canada, Slovenia, Romania and The Netherlands. He has worked with choreographers, directors and photographers such as Ivica Buljan, Maja Delak, Ame Henderson, Sasha Waltz, Keren Levi, Martin Butler, David Zambrano, Karsten Liske, Christophe Chemin, Heinz Peter Knes and Mauricio Ferlin. Since 2007, Matija has been living and working in Pula, Croatia.
Matija Ferlin's classes include Release Technique and Muscle Bone training. His classes begin with exercises sourced from Pilates work with the aim to strengthen the abdominals in order to release the rest. The class continues with floor work that includes exercises and combinations that focus on the isolation of different body parts and joints. Trying to organize the body through its own musicality and importing exercises from Muscle and Bone training, the work involves negotiating with stamina in order to introduce at the end of the class, a dynamic dance sequence that revisits the tools from the beginning of the class.

I. introduction to bouffon
Monday April 7th - Friday April 11
10am - 2pm
An introductory class.
Games and exercises are used to discover students’ pleasure to mock social hypocrisies while simultaneously making audiences love you. Historically and culturally, the Bouffon traveled in groups or gangs. They stuck together and sat on the outside, in their ghettos, their swamps, looking in at the mainstream world. They watched human hypocrisies and laughed. Every now and then, they came back to do a play for the hypocrites. No subject, person or institution was spared their mockery.
Bouffon techniques are extremely useful for performers in all disciplines, as well as for writers, public speakers, teachers and critical thinkers. Through Jeu, students will re-discover their mental and physical agility, sensitivity, stillness and complicity in a group. The Bouffon will allow the actor to be a big person in a small body and to refine their awareness of the world around them. Students are encouraged to embrace this awareness and the power of being seen and listened to. All backgrounds (dance/education/music/writing/theatre/film/clown) will find this work exciting and useful.
II. building a performance
Monday April 14 - Friday April 18
10am - 2pm
Here students should come to class with an idea of something they are wanting to work on and perform. Whether interested in bouffon, clown or character, the students’ focus of the week is on writing and performing. This is a deeper exploration into the world of physical performance that will culminate in an informal public performance at the end of the workshop. Completion of week one of two, or prior experience in bouffon, clown or character is required for this class.

“What I thought was artistic crumbled and was replaced with a whole new aesthetic and range that I didn’t think was possible for me. I am seeing things in a whole new way.” -Dancer and Acrobat, Montreal
“Your workshop will be one of my greatest memories ever! Thank you.”
-Dancer, Winnipeg
“Sharon’s training has been quite different from any other training I have experienced. I am aware of the endless possibilities as an actor and that is a relief.” -Actor, Toronto
“There were so many types of characters that developed from this simple exercise. I know that this process has and will continue to serve me as an artist for years to come.” -Dancer/Actor, Winnipeg
I have a lot of new information in regards to emotional coloring and just what emotion is in relation to
movement and character.” -Actor, Winnipeg
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Lead by Sharon Moore award winning Artistic Director, Cinetic Creations & Immortal Union Dance. Choreographer, movement designer and coach for stage and screen. Member of CADA and ACTRA.
These are “on your feet workshops” designed for performers. We will help cultivate and align the moving body and emotional universe. The workshop includes a series of exercises that focus on awareness, exchange of subtext and motion between performers, seamless transformations, full emotional range; what it entails, how to create these tones and the application and layering in of such elements to a living and breathing character body. Contained in the work are exercises to help the performer tear down patterning in relation to movement, emotion and text. This regimen helps the most important artistic tool you have - YOU!
In performance motion exists on 2 planes; the articulation and vocabulary of committed physical movement and the non-physical world of motion known to us as the internal, interior or emotional universe. The latter is experienced in a frequency wave not perceived by the eye, but by the innate perception of the individual. In creation and performance it is the convergent relationship and mastery of these two planes that deliver a powerful and moving communication within the performance arena.
The workshop aims to achieve a state of presence and freedom in which creative ability can be fully utilized and continually expanded. The contents can be used as a warm-up process, for rehearsal, creation, performance, improvisation and for the building of character itself; specific or abstract.
For over 20 years Sharon has worked as a professional artist in dance, theatre and film where she has had the opportunity to observe the universal key elements that run through performance disciplines. It is vital that these elements live in a fluid and playful state in order to spark inherent creativity!

Calls to Artists
Call to Artists Talent Defined
4th Annual Talent Defined Dance Festival has officially opened its call to artists.
Send email to talentdefined@citydancecorps.com if you are an emerging choreographer and would like to participate.
Call to Artists:
The Toronto Fringe Festival and Dance Umbrella of Ontario are pleased to introduce the
New Dance Initiative at the Fringe Festival
2008 marks the 20th anniversary of both the Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival and the Dance Umbrella of Ontario (DUO). Marking this auspicious year, the two groups are pleased to announce their collaboration in creating a new Dance Initiative which will premiere this summer as part of the 20th anniversary Fringe festivities.
The Fringe Dance Initiative is the creation of eight new dedicated dance performance slots at the Toronto Fringe Festival (July 2-13, 2008). While still unjuried in accordance to the Fringe mandate, these eight performance slots will be filled through a separate lottery exclusive to dance company applications.
For the past 19 years, the Fringe has been committed to developing new programs and opportunities for independent artists in our community. As an unjuried festival, the Fringe receives applications from artists representing a broad range of diverse artistic disciplines. Over the years, applications from independent dance artists have increased. The addition of a dance initiative to the Fringe will provide independent choreographers and dancers, like their
theatrical counterparts, with a valuable opportunity to continue to develop their skills in an open and engaging festival atmosphere. The dance component will also provide the festival with the ability to attract a new audience, encourage crossover between art forms for all of our patrons, and fill a development
gap in the dance community.
Patricia Fraser, Board Chair of The Dance Umbrella of Ontario says, “We at DUO are thrilled that, through a partnership with the Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival, we are able to offer this wonderful opportunity to Ontario’s dance artists. We look forward to the Dance Initiative this year - and for many years to come."
Applications are currently available online at the Fringe website http://www.fringetoronto.com .
The deadline is February 25, 2008.
A lottery will be held on March 3, 2008 for 8 dance performance slots (7 Ontario Based, 1 Canadian/International) location TBA. Those companies drawn to participate will receive the same benefits as our 140+ theatre companies such as 7 performances in a variety of time slots, a professional venue equipped with basic lighting and sound as well as professional technical assistance, full front of house management and box office services, inclusion in the free Fringe program guide, overall event publicity, complete artistic freedom and, most importantly, companies receive 100% of their box office revenue.
We would like to thank the Ontario Arts Council for their generous support of this program, as well as all the dancers who came forth with their thoughts on this new initiative during the planning process.

There are a limited number of positions available each contract year with The National Ballet of Canada. Due to Canadian Immigration requirements, positions are mainly offered to Canadians. This does not preclude the taking on of foreign talent, but it makes the auditions process extremely competitive.
If you are a dancer with little or no professional experience, please click here http://www.national.ballet.ca/about.php?auditions/apprentice for information on our RBC Apprentice Programme auditions.

The likely start date for a new Company member would be August 2008 and the length of the contract would be variable.

Heather Stants is a life long artist and dancer with a degree in photography and fine arts. Her explorations in tribal bellydance
began over eleven years ago when she became the assistant director of Read My Hips* http://www.readmyhips.com in Chicago,
Illinois. In 1999 Heather moved to San Diego, California and formed Urban Tribal Dance Company. Heather's diverse movement and arts background feeds her creativity and her innovative approach to choreography. Urban Tribal Dance Company is known for its contemporary approach to the dance, a pared down costume emphasizing body movements over ornamentation, athleticism and the use of the dance form as a means of personal expression and interpretation. Their creativity has twice earned them the title of "Troupe of the Year" in Zaghareet! Magazine's Golden Belly Awards. In addition to teaching several weekly classes in San Diego since 1999, Heather Stants and Urban Tribal Dance Company have been touring extensively since 2004 sharing their love of modern tribal bellydance with dancers in the U.S. and abroad.
Urban Tribal Dance Company is widely recognized as one of the top tribal fusion pioneers.
