CDA Announcement.
A very Happy New Year to all of you! I’m pleased to begin the year on a very positive note by announcing that Meaghan Giusti has joined the CDA staff as our new Programs and Services Coordinator. She will work with CDA on contract until the end of August. Meaghan is a graduate of York University’s Masters program in dance. She recently spent some time teaching English in Korea, and prior to her travels was an Administrative and Outreach assistant for Princess Productions and the Festival Coordinator for the Fringe Festival of Independent Dance Artists (fFIDA) in Toronto. She has started with us full time as of January 2nd. Her direct phone line is 416-515-8445 and her email address is meaghan@dancecanada.net.
Helen is assisting with the staff transition by training Meaghan in her new role. She will also continue maintaining the bookkeeping at least for the remainder of our fiscal year (to March 31st). Her email is still active (helen@dancecanada.net) though any membership, programming and communications-related correspondence can now be directed to Meaghan.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Helen for her exceptional service to the organization as the Programs and Services Coordinator over the last year and a half. She has been an invaluable asset to us and has shown a sincere commitment to the organization by supporting CDA through the various staff transitions over the past 4 months.
I would also like to acknowledge and thank Shannon Elliott who provided coordination assistance for CDA's September conference and Michael Du Maresq for his generosity in providing temporary administrative support over the past couple months. He has surely kept me sane through it all.
I’m looking forward to another exciting year with CDA!
Best Wishes,
Shannon Litzenberger

$162,900 OTF Grant Has CADA Ontario Kicking Up Its Heels
Toronto, Ontario – The Ontario Chapter of the Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists (CADA Ontario) is the proud recipient of $162,900 province-wide funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) for a three-year period. The funds will be utilized for a number of initiatives including fostering the sustainable development of CADA, implementing the position of full-time Executive Director and expansion of services provided to the membership.
“I am passionate about improving the socio-economic status and working conditions of dance artists,” says Chair of the Board of Directors and prominent contemporary dance artist Sasha Ivanochko. “The commitment from the OTF will enable the Alliance to maximize its potential as a catalyst in the profession.”
The Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists is a professional association and service organization founded by dance artists for dance artists. Established in 1986, as a membership-driven alliance, CADA aims to support dance artists in all their capacities, whether artistic director or dancer, presenter or choreographer, teacher or producer. CADA advocates that everyone involved in dance making take responsibility to develop a dedicated and unified voice to ensure that their unique perspective is recognized within the dance sector and in broader society. Members are provided with an accident insurance, policy, professional development workshops, and subsidies for ongoing training. CADA also publishes the only guideline of its kind in Canada, Professional Standards for Dance.
“Securing OTF funding is a landmark achievement,” says Administrative Director Justine Greenland Duke, who has worked for the Ontario Chapter on a part-time basis since 2001. “The funds will enable the organization to build momentum and give the association the opportunity to support dance artists the way CADA’s founders always envisioned.”
The Board of Directors of CADA extends its thanks to Ontario Trillium Foundation for this opportunity, acknowledges its ongoing support from Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts and recognizes the dedication of its volunteers and staff in making a full time organization a reality.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario. The Foundation allocates grants to eligible charitable and not-for-profit organizations in the arts and culture, environment, human and social services and sports and recreation sectors.
Liability Insurance coverage for Dance Instructors
HKMB is pleased to announce the launch of our brand-new, exclusive online program to provide Liability Insurance coverage for Dance Instructors. This program has been tailored to suit a range of Dance Instructors with options that vary in accordance with the size and scope of operations, with premiums that are tiered accordingly. Often, venues and community centres require their users to provide proof of insurance when renting the facility, and this program becomes a cheap and easy way for dance instructors to obtain the coverages they need to satisfy their venue's requests.
The options are:
Basic: Instructors who are strictly Freelance/Contract Workers
This program is designed for Dance Instructors who work with one or several dance studios but are not considered an employee of any given studio. The Instructor does not arrange or conduct classes independently of a studio.
Comprehensive: Instructors who are also Sole Proprietors
This program is designed for the 'entrepreneur', who organized and conducts their classes independently of any dance studio, and retains all profits from the classes. The instructor cannot operate a "dance studio", that is, own and/or permanently lease a studio location.
Please see the attached for a quick over-view of the program. Dance Instructors can link to our website and purchase the required insurance coverage in less than 5 minutes. The link to the website is: www.hkmb.com/danceinstructors
HKMB is the largest independently owned brokerage in Canada with a highly specialized Sports & Entertainment Practice Area. Our specialization allows us to provide our clients with industry expertise , experience and full understanding of the risks our clients face on a day-to-day basis. For this program, we have partnered with K&K Insurance, a respected and established insurance carrier that specializes in sports & entertainment risk.
Should you have any questions please feel free to contact me direct.

This gestalt series will give you an opportunity to gain more awareness of how you carry your beliefs in your body and how these beliefs may interfere with your expression. Enjoy greater freedom and spontaneity by being present and awake in each moment. Explore how movement mirrors emotion and language. Begin from where you are.
Some of the themes addressed will include
• the essence of mundane, unintentional and incongruent movement as the source of your creativity
• the impulse behind movement as a way to a deeper understanding of body symptoms
• felt body experience as a door to more authentic contact with yourself and others
About Danièle, Graduate of the Gestalt Institute of Toronto Danièle's motivation to overcome a physical challenge early in life led her to practices in which she could allow her body to reveal and express its wisdom through movement. Her extensive study of perception and presence in dance performance for dancers and non-dancers (Deborah Hay, USA), along with her interest in everyday movement as living art (Linda Montano, USA), informed her work as choreographer and performer. Later, Gestalt Therapy became another way for her to experience the inherent intelligence of her body, the re-integration of hidden parts of herself through an increase in consciousness, and the healing nature of living fully in the present. Her somatic approach to Gestalt Therapy integrates over 20 years of movement and body awareness work including the practice of Authentic Movement based on Jung's Active Imagination as well as the rediscovery of experiencing through Sensory Awareness work (Leslie French, Toronto). Danièle has a private practice in down! Town Toronto.

Saturday March 15,
2pm to 5pm
You must bring your own dance partner and be athletic. (Unlike in floor steps classes there is no partner rotation in an air steps class). Bring running shoes or dance sneakers or such, especially if you are following (for safe/secure landings). Two 1.25 hour classes with a break in the middle.
Teachers: Simon Cheryl - Simon has been doing Lindy Hop air steps since 1995. Simon Cheryl had much fun performing their own air steps oriented Lindy Hop choreography at special events in Toronto from December 2006 to April 2007. Cheryl (who lives in Ottawa) has also been hired to perform Lindy Hop outside of Canada including in Nigeria (at the invite of ijo vudu, the Nigerian-International African dance performance troupe as part of a month long tour featuring African and Afro-centric dancing) and in Minneapolis (at the invite of the amazing choreographer/dancer/performer/musician Chester Whitmore).

PRIDECAB APPLICATIONS
The deadline for applying to take part in Pride Cab 2008 is February 15!
Pride Cab is The Buddies in Bad Times Theatre Queer Youth Programme year-end show: a collectively-created, cabaret-style
extravaganza, written and performed by the participants and directed by Evalyn Parry.
Performed on the main stage at Buddies, previous shows have been a sold-out, standing-o kick-off to Buddies Pride Festivities…don’t miss taking part this year!
No previous theatre experience is necessary to participate. The Buddies Youth Programme looks for queer-identified young
people (between 15 and 25 years old) who want to participate in making an original show about queer identity and queer history.
Creation/rehearsals take place Monday and Wednesday nights, 6 to 10 pm, from April 2 to June 18. Final performance is June 20th.
Through a series of workshops and interactive events with seasoned, queer activists and artists, we’ll explore both the history of queer culture in our city as well as the realities of what it means to be young and queer today. We’ll use theatre, music, dance, writing, storytelling and performance art to create a show based on what we discover.
The Pride Cab project is a truly unique opportunity for young, aspiring artists to talk to the older generation of the queer community; to meet like-minded peers, learn new skills, and to create and showcase original work on Buddies main stage.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION IS FEB 15.
Download your application on-line at http://www.artsexy.ca/youth_pridecab.cfm
We will meet with and interview selected applicants.
Best of luck!

Performance library in Japan
I am starting a performance arts library in Kyushu, Japan which will be initially based at the studio where I started training.
Right now it's in its deep infancy, but I want it to be a place where the community gets to see something they would otherwise not be able to.
The majority of the island is considered the "countryside" so their knowledge of dance is very limited to classical ballet and very well know European companies/artists like ROSAS and Pina Bausch who frequent Japan, but of course there's so much more out there!
I'm asking if anyone would want to add to the library works they have choreographed and/or performed in.
I am hoping everything will be on DVDs for easy transport and storage, and would happily make the conversion from video if necessary, returning your master copy of course.
Everything in the library will be for in-house viewing only so there won't be copies of your choreography circulating all over Japan.
The library will be properly catalogued in a database to keep track of all of the information that comes flooding in ;-). That is to say, your work will be treated and shown to the public in a professional manner, including a captioned biography of your career and any personal anecdote(s) about your life in the arts that you would like to share; these will be written in both Japanese and English to promote foreign language study. Folks will also have access to your contact info (websites, blogs) if you so wish.
My next trip to Japan will be in early March.
If anyone would like to participate, please let me know.
Also, please pass the word around to your fellow artists. If someone sees your/their work, it could always lead to other things.
Thanks for reading this long email and I look forward to hearing from you all.

Once a year The National Ballet of Canada holds a Company audition in Toronto. It is intended for established dancers who have performing experience with a professional company. Interested candidates must have strong classical ballet technique.
There are a limited number of positions available each contract year with The National Ballet of Canada. Due to Canadian Immigration requirements, positions are mainly offered to Canadians. This does not preclude the taking on of foreign talent, but it makes the auditions process extremely competitive.
If you are a dancer with little or no professional experience, please click here http://www.national.ballet.ca/about.php?auditions/apprentice for information on our RBC Apprentice Programme auditions.
* Contract Dates?
The likely start date for a new Company member would be August 2008 and the length of the contract would be variable.

Heather Stants is a life long artist and dancer with a degree in photography and fine arts. Her explorations in tribal bellydance
began over eleven years ago when she became the assistant director of Read My Hips* http://www.readmyhips.com in Chicago,
Illinois. In 1999 Heather moved to San Diego, California and formed Urban Tribal Dance Company. Heather's diverse movement and arts background feeds her creativity and her innovative approach to choreography. Urban Tribal Dance Company is known for its contemporary approach to the dance, a pared down costume emphasizing body movements over ornamentation, athleticism and the use of the dance form as a means of personal expression and interpretation. Their creativity has twice earned them the title of "Troupe of the Year" in Zaghareet! Magazine's Golden Belly Awards. In addition to teaching several weekly classes in San Diego since 1999, Heather Stants and Urban Tribal Dance Company have been touring extensively since 2004 sharing their love of modern tribal bellydance with dancers in the U.S. and abroad.
Urban Tribal Dance Company is widely recognized as one of the top tribal fusion pioneers.
