Canada Council for the Arts receives a permanent $30M budgetary increase
(July 20, 2007 – Toronto) - The Canadian Dance Assembly, along with our colleagues in the arts community, gathered at the Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People in Toronto this morning at the invitation of the Minister of Canadian Heritage for a surprise announcement. The Honourable Beverly
J. Oda made public news of a permanent budgetary increase of $30M for the Canada Council in celebration of its 50th anniversary year.
The announcement has been received with great appreciation and relief by artists and arts organizations from across the country who have continued to advocate for increased and stable funding for the Canada Council from the federal government. This announcement is particularly timely as the Canada Council prepares to release its 2008-2011 strategic plan in October of this year. The Council recently undertook an extensive consultation process with the Canadian arts community and other stakeholders that will inform where they will prioritize new funds.
In its 2006 budget, the federal government announced $50 million in additional funding over 2 years for the Canada Council - $20 million in 2006/07 and $30 million in 2007/08. Today’s announcement will make the $30 million in additional funding available to the Council on an ongoing basis, augmenting its annual budget to $181 million - a 20 percent increase from two years ago.
The Canadian Dance Assembly and its members have been actively involved in advocating for increased support for the Canada Council over the last two years. In concert with the Canadian Arts Coalition and the Canadian Conference of the Arts, CDA has repeated key messages to the federal government, including a message to make permanent the $30 million one-time increase to the Council for 2007/08. The Minister’s announcement is a direct reflection of this message delivered collectively by the arts community over the last year.
The Canadian Dance Assembly and its national membership of over 200 dance professionals and dance organizations are thrilled at this significant and timely commitment from the federal government. CDA looks forward to furthering our work with the Canada Council to design policies and priorities that support the development of the dance sector in Canada.
Follow-Up to Heritage’s Budgetary Increase for Canada Council
From CDA Bulletin
Minister Oda’s recent announcement of a permanent $30 million dollar budgetary increase for the Canada Council was a pleasant, if somewhat unexpected, surprise. This investment has a particularly important impact to keep in mind, which is that unlike single time-limited investment, permanent, ongoing funding for the Council means more long-term stability for the artists and arts organizations. Adding funds to the Council’s base budget also means that compared with other soon-to-expire Heritage programs (like in the case of the Tomorrow Starts Today slate of programs due to expire in 2009-2010), this new investment in the Council will be more secure as permanent baseline funding is harder to cut.
Uncharacteristic of this government, the $30 million commitment clearly responds to advocacy messages articulated repeatedly by the national arts community through the organized efforts of Canadian Conference of the Arts and the Canadian Arts Coalition, both of which the CDA is a member of.
Good news for arts and culture hasn’t been at all forthcoming from this government, but when it is, it is important that we respond with gratitude and recognition of the positive impact this increase will have on dance and the arts in Canada.
Please take the time to write to the Minister and thank her for this welcome commitment.

Call for Volunteers!
tiger princess dance projects is pleased to announce that Yvonne Ng was selected as a curated exhibition for the 2007 Nuit Blanche festival! Nothing short of ambitious, Yvonne’s grand vision is multifarious from top to toe, and our preparations are making headway. Catch the excitement:
Collection Cecil Street Community Centre, 58 Cecil Street, Kensington Market Nuit Blanche Zone B – Saturday September 29th, 7pm to 7am – Free Admission A festival, a spectacle, a barrage… Journey through a colourful cacophony of art, echoing the casual atmosphere of South East Asian street festivals. Honouring the homeland she carries within, dance artist Yvonne Ng performs the full-length premiere of Collection, a series six “self-portrait” dance works with some of Toronto's respected composers: Anne Bourne, Lee Pui Ming, Darren Copeland, Henry Kucharzyk, and Mark Johnson. Ng transforms the building into a compact festival of its own, surrounding herself with puppeteers, storytellers, dancers, magicians, musicians, singers, poets, and more. Together they concentrate the excitement with constant and over lapping performances, harkening back to the garishly layered and casually exposed Chinese street Opera. Browse, chat, and eat as a wild assortment of artists vies for your passing attention. Overwhelm your senses and be transported. Nuit Blanche For one sleepless night Toronto will be transformed by artists. The familiar will be discarded and Toronto will become the artistic playground for a series of exhilarating contemporary art experiences. One night only. All night long.
Call for Volunteers!

If you have different availability, we may be able to negotiate another shift. Our 4.5 hour slots are shorter than the regular Nuit Blanche volunteer shifts, but if you’re able and willing to stay later please let us know.
There will also be an optional information session from Nuit Blanche, so that you may be a knowledgeable resource for the curious public. This orientation will provide a free Nuit Blanche t-shirt, an overview of the entire event, and a walking tour of each zone with the location of the volunteer hubs where coffee and snacks will be supplied.
