The Dance Umbrella of Ontario (DUO) is proud to present over 10 Toronto-based dance companies and dancers who will perform for FREE in Yonge-Dundas Square in celebration of International Dance Day. This event will celebrate dance by bringing fantastic Toronto artists together for a one of a kind performance. Another dance project I Want Rhythm will be dancing their way to the Square along Yonge Street from Front Street, as a part of their “public space intervention that gives people permission to dance to music they encounter just a walkin’ down the street” (more info at www.myspace.com/iwantrhythm)

Official message for Dance Day

29 April 2007
This year's Dance Day is dedicated to the children.
The International Dance Council CID UNESCO, together with UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, fights for measures to give children the best start in life, because proper education forms the strongest foundation for a person’s future.
We believe that caring for children is the cornerstone of human progress. Our primary goal is to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path. Thus we advance the cause of humanity.
Dance is a basic component of personal and societal development. We recommend quality basic education in dance for all children with an emphasis on gender equality and eliminating disparities of all kinds.
No child should be left without the opportunity to learn and to practice dance. Access to the art constitutes a right for every person, and children in particular. This right should be protected, in order to help meet their basic needs and reach their full potential.
CID upholds dance instruction by qualified teachers at all levels of formal education, because dance constitutes a strong foundation for a person’s well being.

Prof. Alkis Raftis
President of the International Dance Council CID
UNESCO, Paris

From UNESCO website: Dance Day preparations
On the 29th of April, as every year since 1982, World Dance Day will be celebrated all over the world by the international community of dancers and dance enthusiasts.
The International Dance Council CID has prepared the following guidelines as a useful checklist for persons institutionally involved in the wider field of dance: teachers, choreographers, group leaders, journalists, researchers, associations, suppliers, organizations etc.

Object: The main purpose of Dance Day events is to attract the attention of the wider public to the art of dance. Special emphasis should be given to addressing a “new” public, people who do not follow dance events during the course of the year.
Events: Dance Day events may be special performances, open-door courses, public rehearsals, lectures, exhibitions, articles in newspapers and magazines, dance evenings, radio and TV programs, visits, street shows etc.

Organizers: Events are primarily organized by dance companies, amateur groups, schools, associations and other institutions active in dance. Wherever possible, it is better for events to be organized jointly with a non-dance institution such as a government agency, a public school, a municipality, a business enterprise, a trade union.

Content; Organizers have full freedom to define the content of the event.
Make sure that you include general information on the art of dance, its history, its importance to society, its universal character. This can be done in a short speech, a note in the program, a text distributed to those present. By adding this dimension you make the event different from dance activities taking place any other day.
Read a message from a prominent personality, a poem, a passage from a text by a famous author.

Coordination: In order to achieve maximum success, it is important that preparations start early enough.
It is imperative to inform the press and generally the media about your event.
Notify an organization holding a central position at regional or national level, which should publish a list of events planned for Dance Day.
Entrance to events should preferably be free, or by invitation. Invite persons who do not normally attend dance events.

Location: At best, events should take place in “new” places, such as streets, parks, squares, shops, factories, villages, discotheques, schools, stadiums etc.
By setting the event in original surroundings you stress the fact that this is an event dedicated to the universal family of dancers.

President of the CID

The Canadian Dance Assembly Invites All Canadians To Celebrate the 25th International Dance Day on April 29!

Toronto, ON –- Under the auspices of International Dance Day (April 29), members of the Canadian Dance Assembly will be presenting dance events across the country to promote the art of dance to the public. “This is an important annual celebration for the dance community in Canada and around the world,” notes Shannon Litzenberger, Manager of Operations of the Canada Dance Assembly. “International Dance Day raises the profile of dance in the public eye, particularly for individuals who might not normally attend dance events during the course of the year.” As part of the festivities, the Canadian Dance Assembly has commissioned Margie Gillis to pen a Canadian message about dance.

Initiated in 1982 by the International Dance Committee of the UNESCO International Theatre Institute (http://iti.unesco.org), International Dance Day falls on April 29 of every year, commemorating the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, a distinguished choreographer that brought about significant reforms in ballet production. Every year, an international message authored by a well-known dance personality is circulated around the world as part of International Dance Day celebrations. Additionally, since 2005, the Canadian Dance Assembly has issued a Canadian message authored by a Canadian dance personality.

This year, the Canadian Dance Assembly has commissioned the internationally acclaimed solo dance artist Margie Gillis to pen an invitation to all Canadians to celebrate dance. Her message is as follows:

Our bodies are the piece of nature we are born with, Our world within a world. On this international day of dance, we invite you to celebrate; by hearing your spirit’s dance, by feeling your intellect’s dance, and by releasing into your nature, your physical dance. Celebrate life! Express, Explore, Transform and Heal...

The International Dance Day Message commissioned by ITI – UNESCO has been written by the renowned dancer, choreographer and artistic director Sasha Waltz: One dances on birthdays, at weddings, on the streets, in living rooms, on the stage, behind the scenes. To communicate joy, sorrow, as ritual and borderline experience. Dance is a universal language; emissary for a peaceful world, for equality, tolerance and compassion. Dance teaches us sensibility, consciousness and to pay attention to the moment.
Dance is the manifestation of our being alive. Dance is transformation. Dance locates the soul, dance affords the body a spiritual dimension. Dance enables us to feel our body, to rise above, to go beyond, to be another body.
To dance is to participate actively in the vibration of the universe.

The Canadian Dance Assembly, the national organization representing the interests of 200 dance professionals and organizations from across Canada, recognizes the UNESCO International Dance Day annually. To commemorate International Dance Day 2007, CDA members will host a vast array of events and celebrations in their respective regions. Highlights include:

About Menaka Thakkar and the Menaka Thakkar Dance Company

When Menaka Thakkar moved to Canada from India thirty-three years ago, Classical Indian dance rarely existed in this country. Recognizing the need to expose and educate the dance community and public about this ancient art form, Menaka Thakkar traveled across Canada to teach and perform in universities, schools and theatres. Later, Menaka opened The Canadian Academy of Indian Dance: Nrtyakala, and the Menaka Thakkar Dance Company. The Company has become Canada’s premiere Indian dance company, exposing audiences to the stunning beauty of traditional Indian dance, while remaining open to other dance cultures in the creation of new works. The company tours nationally and internationally.

Federal Budget 2007 – Clarification re: National Arts Training Program
[CCA Bulletin 13/07]
From the CDA Bulletin
CCA Bulletin 12/07 <http://www.ccarts.ca/en/advocacy/bulletins/2007/1207.htm> on the Budget has caused some concern with those specifically interested in the National Arts Training Program, both on the government and the administrators’ sides. (The CCA certainly did not mean to cause any added stress and we apologize if we did!)

Based on the Main Estimates <http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/est-pre/20072008/me-bd/pub/ME-001_e.asp> tabled on February 27 (the only official document currently available on how the various departments will spend the Budget), the CCA pointed to a decrease of five million dollars in the National Arts Training Program’s funding. According to the latest information, it appears that there are currently no indications that the program’s budget will effectively be reduced. Like last year, the balance should appear in next fall’s Supplementary Estimates, political circumstances permitting.

This is another example of how the federal government is using Supplementary Estimates to push back formal commitments, which is a problem CCA has been raising for a number of years now in our federal budget analyses. The “collateral damage” of the practice is that all involved have to live on an even shorter predictability than the one-year federal budgetary cycle. Viewed from the point of view of investing in the Canadian arts and culture sector, this is a somewhat questionable practice that we deem should be rectified.

CDA Applauds the Ontario Government For Increasing Funding To the Ontario Arts Council

From the CDA Bulletin
On Thursday, March 22, the Ontario Government's 2007 budget announcement included a slate of items of in support of arts and culture, including a $15 million increase in annual funding to the Ontario Arts Council.

This announcement comes after concerted efforts by the Canadian Dance Assembly with our partner National Arts Service Organizations and Ontario-based service colleagues to support the Ontario Arts Council's Business Case which argued for an increase of $35 million to the agency's granting budget over three years. A commitment from the provincial government to increase funding to the OAC by $15 million over three years on a permanent basis is a very positive step toward this goal - one that acknowledges the need for long-term, stable funding for the arts. We encourage our Ontario-based members to acknowledge and thank the government for investing in the cultural sector by writing or calling their MPPs.

Prior to the budget announcement, CDA worked with the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT), Opera.CA and Orchestras Canada to ensure performing arts organizations were represented in the mix of submissions and presentations made to the Ontario Standing Committee on Finance as part of the government's pre-budget consultation process.  CDA prompted some key Ontario-based members to submit requests to appear in front of the Committee.  CDA advocacy committee member, Brian Webb (representing the Canada Dance Festival) was one of the few performing arts organization representatives in Ontario who succeeded in securing a time slot to appear in front of the Committee.  CDA arranged consultation for Brian with members of the Ontario dance community, and helped him to prepare a 10-minute presentation about the need for long-term, stable funding for the arts, which he also submitted in hard copy to the Committee.  His presentation was very well-received by the Committee.

On behalf of the dance and performing arts community, CDA extends a warm thank you to Brian for his time and effort, as well as to all of our members who participated in the consultation process.  Brian's presentation and the government's response will soon be available online at www.dancecanada.net under “Advocacy Resources”.

As noted in The Arts Advocate newsletter, other items of interest to the cultural sector include the following;

  • $20 million increase in annual funding to the Ontario Trillium Foundation, over three years;
  • $2.3 million increase in annual funding to the Community Museums Operating Grants (CMOG), starting in 2007/08.  (The Ontario Museum Association was requesting an increase of $5 million to CMOG, plus an additional $5 million for museums not eligible in that program).

Additionally, a number of one-time funding allocations were made for ‘general purposes of supporting arts and creativity’:

  • $10 million to the Arts Endowment Fund;
  • $5.5 million for Luminato, the Toronto Festival of Art and Creativity;
  • $5 million to the Ontario Media Development Corporation, with an insinuation it will address concept development and cash flow financing for support tools for the screen-based industries;
  • $1.2 million for operating for the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.
  • Year-end capital money of $12.5 million is allocated to the Toronto International Film Festival.

The Ontario budget papers promise that “the government proposes to introduce new legislation:  the Status of Ontario’s Artists Act, 2007. “  It goes on to say “This will be an important step towards bringing artists the profile and recognition that they deserve at the provincial level, as well as in their local communities.”

Through this budget, the Ontario government delivers on outstanding promises in the Liberal Party’s 2003 election platform on culture, and more recently, several of the recommendations contained in the report of the Minister’s Advisory Committee on Arts and Culture.

Annual operating support from the Ontario Arts Council assists the Canadian Dance Assembly in its delivery of programs and services to the national dance community.

Government Invests New $ in the Arts!
From the CDA Bulletin
Toronto, March 23, 2007 The provincial government’s March 22nd budget contained exciting news for the arts. The Ontario Arts Council’s annual budget has been increased by $15 million over three years – a 37.5 per cent increase that will take it from the current $40 million to $55 million by 2009-10.

Last spring, OAC presented a business case for increased funds to the Ministry of Culture. Over the course of the past year, Ontario’s arts community has been active in its support for additional resources.

“We are delighted with the announcement and I congratulate the Minister of Culture, the Honourable Caroline Di Cocco, and her team for their work on behalf of the arts community,” said OAC Chair, Martha Durdin. “The new funds will improve stability for Ontario’s arts community and at the same time encourage creativity and growth.”

Over the next three years, the money will be used to support new and established artists and arts organizations. It will also support growing needs in the Francophone, Aboriginal, culturally-diverse and regional arts communities. Arts education, outreach and touring will also receive increases.

OAC is embarking on a strategic planning process that will involve consultations with various elements of the arts community around the province. What we learn from this process will guide our decision-making for the new resources.

We will share more information as it becomes available.

Hill Strategies Research to conduct research into the state of arts organizations in Canada for Business for the Arts
From the CDA Bulletin
Business for the Arts (formerly The Council for Business and the Arts in Canada) has been tracking the state of the arts in Canada since 1976, capturing financial and statistical data on private sector support, public sector funding, earned revenues, attendance, employment and other relevant data. Business for the Arts' annual surveys provide significant insight into the health of non-profit performing arts companies, museums and art galleries.

For the first time this year, Hill Strategies Research will conduct data analysis for Business for the Arts based on the survey results. One of the most interesting aspects of this project is the opportunity to conduct longer-term trend analysis and benchmarking.

Hill Strategies Research encourages managers of Canadian non-profit performing arts organizations, museums and art galleries to complete the Business for the Arts form. Wide participation by the arts community will help ensure meaningful and powerful data analysis. The deadline is April 25th.

Data analysis will take place once all surveys have been received, with a projected release date of August 2007. The reports will be based on 2005-06 data.

Further information, as well as online links to submit survey data, is available at http://www.businessforarts.org/surveys/default.asp <http://www.businessforarts.org/surveys/default.asp> .

Business Contributions to Canadian Communities: Findings from a Qualitative Study of Current Practices
[Arts Research Monitor]
From the CDA Bulletin
Based on a literature review and roundtable discussions with 47 business representatives in late 2006, this "exploratory investigation of the community investment activities of Canadian businesses" summarizes the practices and challenges, from a business perspective, related to business donations and community investment.

Business support for non-profit organizations ranges from financial and in-kind contributions to employee volunteering and matching employees' charitable contributions. Four key reasons are given for business contributions: 1) marketing the company's brand; 2) the success of many businesses depends on the strength of the community; 3) many businesses "need to be accepted and valued by the communities in which they operate"; and 4) an increased ability to attract and retain employees.

One key finding of the report is that there is very little documentation of business contributions to Canadian communities. The report indicates that "community investment is not very well developed and practitioners appear to be grappling with a variety of issues". In particular, there is little, if any, measurement of the results of business contributions. This raises "questions about the extent to which community investments are being effectively managed and whether returns on these investments are being maximized". Many businesses even had "difficulties producing accurate estimates of the total dollar value of their cash contributions".

An Imagine Canada analysis of taxation data showed that only 3% of businesses claimed charitable donations on their 2003 tax returns, with total donations of $1 billion. A 2003 survey of non-profit organizations estimated that, through both donations and sponsorships, businesses contributed $2.8 billion to non-profit organizations.

In general, organizations must ask for assistance: "companies tend to respond to requests from community organizations rather than to proactively seek organizations that are aligned with their strategic interests". However, many businesses are overwhelmed by the volume of requests.

It is difficult for organizations to know who to contact for donations: there is little consistency between businesses regarding responsibility for community contributions. Contributions can be influenced by the CEO, senior management, the board of directors, business owners, individual employees and separate business foundations. Larger companies are more likely to have policies, structures and staff involved in their community contributions.

Key challenges for businesses include limited staff to respond to requests, lack of internal adherence to corporate policies, and "difficulties balancing and managing the expectations of multiple stakeholders".

The report suggests that businesspeople involved in community contributions would like "better information, training, education and opportunities to share experiences". Areas of training and information-sharing could include:
  • Better knowledge about what other businesses are doing;
  • Information about promising or innovative practices; and
  • Better information about charitable and nonprofit community organizations.
Future research will provide a more detailed portrait of business donations based on a representative survey of Canadian businesses.

Canadians continue to support cultural activities
From the CDA Bulletin

More Canadians read a book than go to a movie
Art galleries are increasingly popular with Canadians
Classical music audiences increased slightly
Most other cultural and heritage activities, including the performing arts, attracted roughly the same percentage of Canadians in 2005 as in 1992

A Profile of the Cultural and Heritage Activities of Canadians in 2005, the 18th report in the Statistical Insights on the Arts series from Hill Strategies Research, provides insights into the number and percentage of Canadians 15 or older who, in 2005:

· Attended live performances;
· Visited art galleries and other museums;
· Visited historic sites and other heritage organizations;
· Read a newspaper, magazine or book;
· Watched movies or videos; or
· Listened to recorded music.

Where comparable data is available, trends in cultural and heritage activities between 1992 and 2005 are also highlighted.

The data is drawn from Statistics Canada's General Social Surveys of 1992, 1998 and 2005, in-depth telephone surveys of about 10,000 Canadians 15 years of age or older. Individuals are counted only once in each activity regardless of how many times they participated in the activity. In addition to this text summary of the key findings in the report, the table at the end of the summary provides some key statistics regarding the cultural and heritage activities of Canadians in 2005.

Subsequent reports in the Statistical Insights on the Arts series will examine provincial data and factors in cultural participation.

Canadians continue to support cultural activities
Overall, the report finds that most cultural and heritage activities attracted roughly the same percentage of Canadians in 2005 as in 1992. Given the population growth between 1992 and 2005, all cultural and heritage activities saw an increase in the absolute number of Canadians attending, visiting, reading, watching or listening.

Reading
In 2005, as a leisure activity (not for paid work or studies):

· 86.7% of the population 15 or older read a newspaper (22.6 million Canadians);
· 78.2% read a magazine (20.4 million Canadians); and
· 66.6% read at least one book (17.4 million Canadians).

About four in 10 Canadians read at least one book each month in 2005.

The 17.4 million Canadians reading at least one book is slightly larger than the 15.9 million Canadians going to at least one movie at a theatre or drive-in.

Between 1992 and 2005, the rate of book reading remained stable, with two-thirds of the population reading at least one book in 1992, 1998 and 2005. The stability of book reading in Canada is in contrast to the findings of a recent American study entitled Reading at Risk. That report, prepared by Hill Strategies Research for the National Endowment for the Arts, showed that the proportion of Americans reading any type of book in their leisure time (not for work or school) decreased from 60.9% in 1992 to 56.6% in 2002.

In Canada, magazine reading decreased slightly and newspaper reading decreased more substantially between 1992 and 2005.

Art galleries and other museums
There was a strong and consistent increase in art gallery visitors between 1992 and 2005, which may be an indication of an increasingly visual culture in Canada. The overall percentage of Canadians visiting an art gallery increased from 19.6% in 1992 to 24.0% in 1998 and increased again to 26.7% in 2005. Exactly 7 million Canadians visited an art gallery in 2005.

There was also an increase, albeit much less pronounced, in the percentage of Canadians visiting any type of museum. Just over one-third of Canadians (35.2%) 15 years of age or older, or 9.2 million people, visited a museum in 2005.

Performing arts
In 2005, 41.2% of the population 15 or older (10.8 million Canadians) attended a concert or performance by professional artists of music, dance, theatre or opera (excluding cultural festivals). This is very close to the performing arts attendance rate in 1992 (42.4%), and a distinct increase from the 1998 rate (37.6%).

The report shows that:

· 22.6% of the population 15 or older attended a theatrical performance such as a drama, musical theatre, dinner theatre, comedy (5.9 million Canadians);
· 23.8% attended a popular musical performance such as pop/rock, jazz, blues, folk, country and western (6.2 million Canadians); and
· 9.5% attended a symphonic or classical music performance (2.5 million Canadians).

Theatre and popular music saw very little overall change in attendance rates between 1992 and 2005.
Contrary to fears concerning a general decline of classical audiences, classical music saw a slight increase in the percentage of the population attending a performance between 1992 and 2005.

Respondents were asked three subsequent questions about performing arts attendance:

· 23.7% of the population 15 or over attended a cultural or artistic festival (such as film, fringe, dance, jazz, folk, rock, buskers or comedy) (6.2 million Canadians);
· 15.1% attended a performance of cultural/heritage music, theatre or dance (e.g. Aboriginal Peoples, Chinese, Ukrainian) (3.9 million Canadians); and
· 10.8% attended another kind of cultural performance (2.8 million Canadians).

Questions about other specific disciplines, such as dance or opera, were not asked in the 2005 General Social Survey.
A large proportion of those who attended the various types of performing arts events did so between one and four times in 2005.

Heritage activities
One in three Canadians visited an historic site in 2005 (almost 9 million people), and the same number visited a zoo, aquarium, botanical garden, planetarium or observatory. Nearly one in two Canadians visited a conservation area or nature park in 2005 (12 million people). One in six Canadians visited conservation areas or nature parks at least five times during the year.

Between 1992 and 2005:

· There was a significant increase in the percentage of Canadians visiting an historic site;
· The percentage of Canadians visiting a zoo, aquarium, botanical garden, planetarium or observatory decreased slightly; and
· The percentage of Canadians visiting a conservation area or nature park changed very little.

Movies and videos
Movies and videos are quite popular with Canadians. In 2005, six in 10 Canadians went to at least one movie at a theatre or drive-in (about 16 million people), while eight in 10 watched a video (over 20 million people). About one in three Canadians went to five or more movies in 2005. Both activities showed increases between 1992 and 2005.

Recorded music
The report also highlights the music listening activities of Canadians: 28.6% listened to downloaded music in 2005 (7.5 million people), compared with 83.9% who listened to music recorded on CDs or other formats (about 22 million people). Very few Canadians relied exclusively on downloaded music in 2005.

Full report also available
The full report, funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Ontario Arts Council, is available free of charge on the Hill Strategies Research website (http://www.hillstrategies.com <http://www.hillstrategies.com/> ) and the websites of the funding organizations.

Advertising Opportunity

On May 15th the Hummingbird Centre will play host to Montreal’s La La La Human Steps where they will be performing their new work, Amjad.
As you are aware the company is highly regarded and has a very devout following among the dance community. The audience coming to see them will then be composed of culturally-aware individuals with both a passion for and knowledge of dance. The house program would therefore represent a wonderful opportunity for dance artists to reach this highly relevant audience.

Our full page advertisements costs $1000 and half-pages cost $600- however we can also make arrangements for smaller sized ads if needed.

If you have any questions, or need any additional information please do not hesitate to let me know.

Authentic Movement is a practice that creates space for movement (including sound) to emerge from within. The inherent structure allows for the possibility to meet the self more fully and to discover a range of expression previously unknown.

Emphasis is on being present instead of on any particular kind of movement so this form is open to any who wish to expand and explore their physicality, creativity, spirituality, self-containment, and capacity to feel.

Gennie Brukner trained for three years at the Authentic Movement Institute in Berkeley, California.

Skinner Releasing Technique˙
with Julia Sasso

The Skinner Releasing Technique (SRT) is a pioneering approach to dancing evolved from a simple principle: when we let go of habitual holding patterns and ways of thinking we can move more freely, powerfully and articulately. We find energy, improve strength and flexibility and awaken creativity and spontaneity. A considerable influence on leading choreographers and dancers around the world, SRT can enhance any movement style while fostering artistic sensibility and creative unfolding.

Classes include imagery as a powerful tool for transformation. The
class atmosphere is gentle. Each participant can proceed at their own
pace and in their own way. SRT is an experiential, intuitive approach
taking into account the physical body and the energies that move
through and around us.

Contemporary Dance Technique

with Julia Sasso

The focus of the class is centered on instructor Julia Sasso‚s movement language, which draws on her considerable practice of contemporary and
classical dance forms.

Contemporary Dance Technique addresses concepts of alignment, breath, focus, musicality, strength and dynamics through a range of danced phrases. Within a centre format the class explores the physics of suspension and release, weight and buoyancy, thrust, speed, precision, interpretation; our relationship to the floor and space in all directions, in stillness, in and out of balance and in motion.

Class Schedule
June 25th thru July 5th
(Monday through Friday both weeks, Weekends off)

9:30am - 11:00am Skinner Releasing Technique with Julia Sasso
11:15am -12:45pm Contemporary Dance Technique with Julia Sasso

1:45pm - 3:15pm Repertoire with Julia Sasso
3:30pm - 5:00pm Repertoire with Brent Lott

On the last day of the WCD Summer Intensive, Friday July 6th, there will be a public performance in the afternoon showcasing the work learned in the previous two weeks.

RUSTICLE GYM ~ Spring Fling

Toronto's Best Movement Based Theatre Company (NOW 2006) is thrilled to offer 4 new workshops May 5th to 19th, 2007!

After a successful fall session we are pleased to offer gyms in Yoga, Text and Improv, Movement and a very special gym called The Rusticle Rehearsal ~ a session in building work from scratch.

WHAT IS IT?
The Rusticle Gym is a place to workout, to stretch tired, under-used muscles or find muscles you never knew you had. It is for people looking to sweat physically, emotionally and creatively. It is for people of all shapes, sizes and ages. It is where one comes to explore their creative landscape. Instead of elliptical machines and free weights, participants workout in physical image based workshops or on monologue/scene
study. It is about exploration of the creative known and unknown discovered through the elements that Theatre Rusticle uses when we create our shows.

WHO IS IF FOR?
The Gym is for EVERYONE ~ actors, dancers, musicians, seniors, young people (over 16) and non-artists. Because the approach to the sessions is holistic, participants from all walks of life and technical level can engage in the gym, work out, and get down and dirty in creative discovery.

WHAT ARE THE SESSIONS?
Between May 5th and 19th, we are offering 4 Gyms led by Theatre Rusticle artists Viv Moore, Hume Baugh, Siobhan Power and Allyson McMackon. The sessions are varied and include elements of the techniques Theatre Rusticle uses in creating our work.

The Gym is driven by the need to encourage embodiment and ignite the imagination while providing an environment that guides and leads without judgement. We advocate the freedom of working in non-traditional forms, in working out the voice and the body, in working in abstraction and
naturalism. Through this, participants will see the malleability of the process and find ways in which they can either integrate the work into their own practice and lives. We recognize that "play" and theatrical discovery are essential components in the health of our art form and our lives in
general.
You have the opportunity to work with professional artists who are pushing the boundaries of performance practice in our community.
You can work at your own pace, with our own goals in mind, learn and grow, ignite and release.
The sessions are experiences in practical technique.
They are theatrical meditations.
They are two hours with you and your creative self.

Workshop Series: Terrible Noises for Beautiful People: Cobra Edition
Improvised Sound classes w. Misha Glouberman

Terrible Noises for Beautiful People is a series of vocal sound improvisation classes and events geared primarily for non-musicians (though musicians are welcome). My central interest in these classes is in getting people together to interact in ways that are unfamiliar, pleasurable, and interesting.

The next event is the Cobra Edition: It will be a series of weekly workshops based around John Zorn’s complicated and beautiful game composition Cobra.

You don’t have to know about music, or be able to sing. But an ability to enjoy unfamiliar sounds is definitely a plus. An ability to enjoy other people might also be okay. The series will spend some time on fundamentals of improvisation (how to worry less, how to give and take control, how to be surprised, how to make interesting decisions in groups, how to enjoy being put off-balance, etc...), and some time on the specifics of Zorn’s piece.

About Misha Glouberman
I host and run the Room 101 Games series and the Trampoline Hall Lectures, and recently performed in Diplomatic Immunities and Reasonable People Reasonably Disagreeing. I have taught many classes, largely on unuseful subjects, to many people. I claim to be Canada’s foremost Charades instructor, a claim which goes unchallenged.

Irene Dowd Intensive Workshop: Muscle Balancing at the Hip Joint
Irene Dowd at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre

10:00 am - 2:30 pm
Studio B (includes a 30 minute lunch break)
$50.00 professional rate
$30.00 Professional Training Program alumni rate

A perfect balance of activity, strength, and flexibility between muscles of front and back, inside and outside of each hip joint is difficult to achieve and maintain.
Imbalances can translate into diminished freedom of movement, distortions or asymmetries in pelvis and spine organization, and even vulnerability to certain kinds of injury.
In this workshop, we will review some principles of neuromuscular training that we can each apply within our own bodies in order to achieve greater muscle balance.

We will also learn an abbreviated version of ORBITS, © Irene Dowd 1998, created to warm-up all the muscles surrounding our hip joints for dancing.

Renaissance dance workshop reminder (Apr. 19)

The last Renaissance dance workshop of the year is coming up!
Thursday, Apr. 19
7-9pm

We'll be looking at my favourite dance, the canary or canario. This is a court dance with a Spanish flavour -- sort of like "the sixteenth century does flamenco", with clapping and footstamping and everything.
Mike Franklin will be providing live accompaniment on a variety of period instruments, and the workshop will be held in Room 323, on the 3rd floor of Victoria College at the University of Toronto.

Admission is free and open to all... although donations are always appreciated.
For more details, please see the website:
http://coranto.sa.utoronto.ca/
Hope to see you this Thursday!

Matija Ferlin
Matija Ferlin is a graduate of The School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam. He has presented and performed his own work in Croatia, Portugal, Germany and The Netherlands. His work includes several short movies, exhibitions and stage performances. Recently a company member with Sasha Waltz and Guests, Matija has also worked with the choreographers and directors Maja Delak, Ame Henderson, Keren Levi, Martin Butler, David Zambrano and Mauricio Ferlin. For the past two years Matija has been actively teaching technique classes in Croatia, Sweden and Canada. Since 2007, Matija lives and works in Pula, Croatia.

Matija’s training encompasses Release Technique, Ballet and Muscle & Bone training. His classes begin with exercises sourced from Pilates work with the aim to strengthen the abdominals in order to release the rest. The class continues with floor work that includes exercises and combinations that focus on the isolation of different body parts and joints. Trying to organize the body through its own musicality and importing exercises from Muscle and Bone training, the work involves negotiating with stamina in order to introduce at the end of the class, a dynamic dance sequence that revisits the tools from the beginning of the class.

PUBLIC RECORDINGS
Public Recordings was founded in 2004 as a vehicle for the production and dissemination of work of dance artist Ame Henderson. With a hybrid performance language that is directly related to the exploration of interim spaces and to the specificity of context, Ame Henderson's experiments cross disciplines and continents. Working with the body as a primary site, these performances ask us to witness the body as a location for human experience and a conduit of possible meaningful exchange - if we can only abandon to it.

/Dance/Songs/, Public Recordings newest creation will be presented at
Pixel Projects
8pm, May 29th and 30th at Main Hall, 5390 St-Laurent, Montreal

Looking for a few more Tiny Performers!

As the closing program of the Festival I am curating my final edition of 40 Tiny Performances! This event originally conceived by Darren O’Donnell has been tones of fun to curate, but I am retiring for a while to make space for a few other cool ideas that I would like to try out!

BUT, having said that, I still need about 10 more performers for this final showing on Wednesday April 18 at 10 p.m. at Lula Lounge !

What does this entail? You create a one minute piece where you dance, sing, jive, rant, scream or do whatever it is that you want to do! You just have one minute to do it!

You would show up at 9:30 at Lula Lounge or earlier in the evening to take in some great art!

What do you get? Well, the satisfaction of knowing that you are supporting a great arts event, a chance to meet some cool artists, and free entrance to the last night of the festival, all for performing a one minute piece!

If you are available and interested please do contact me as soon as possible at lisa@girlcancreate.
