CADA Ontario Board Elections Successful!
On January 1st the polls closed on CADA ON’s first election of their Board of Directors using the newly launched CADA Online Interactive Community.
Five new directors have been elected and the Alliance congratulates Nova Bhattacharya, Jennifer Dick, Sasha Ivanochko, Lucy Rupert and Ann-Marie Williams, each respected and valuable members of the professional dance community. They will join Lara Bernstein, Piotr Biernat, Arwyn Carpenter, Christine Heath, Kate Holden and Chair, Louis Laberge-Côté.
The new, complete Board will begin the year with a social gathering to get acquainted and then with a meeting and the election of a new Executive Committee.
In addition, the Board will be piloting a new governance structure, placing each Director in change of a Sub-Committee. These committees will reflect current and anticipated activity for the year including the Training Subsidy Program, Professional Standards for Dance, Company Outreach, Insurance, Professional Discounts, Organizational Policy & Governance and Advocacy.
Recruiting has already begun and these committees will be made up of volunteers from the professional community and from the CADA Ontario membership at large.
This change in the governance structure is being implemented to help CADA Ontario increase its engagement with the community, train and mentor new volunteers, and ensure that its activities continue to reflect the needs of the membership.
Once again, congratulations to the new Directors!
Please contact the Ontario Chapter of the Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists for more information at 416-657-2276 or cada.info@sympatico.ca.

Marc Boivin: The Dancer's Creative Process
February 17-18, 2007
10am to 5:15pm (12-1:15pm lunch)
Location:
Dovehouse Dance Ballroom
805 Dovercourt Rd,
Toronto
Fee:
$90 - or $80 if paid by January 5th
$15 for morning technique class only (10am-noon)
Workshop open to professional dancers and dance students in their final 2 years of a professional dance training program only.
In the morning, Marc Boivin offers a comprehensive contemporary dance class composed from the pedagogical material of the Limon
technique and some principles of ballet.
Using the traditional progression of a centre class, the dancer is challenged to develop equilibrium between strength and the free released weight of momentum; the clarity of impulse within, and the outward relationship to space through form and focus. In the process, technique is defined as the appropriation of tools in order to physically articulate the artistic contribution of the dancer through his/her choices.
Through the technical work participants focus on understanding and articulating the mechanics of movement within their own physical systems, as well, in relation to the science of this chosen traditional and contemporary work. The work has many purposes among which are:
- The safety and health of the body as it is developed beyond its daily use to a higher level of efficiency and expressivity
- The understanding of a personal physical system inherent to our dancing, something to be first accepted, then challenged and developed
- The appropriation of a mode of expression in all its parameters
- An expanded range of possibilities and a higher sensitivity through a heightened vitality within the body.
Creative Process (afternoon session):
How are the body and the mind of the dancer prepared for the creative process and set on stage?
How best can perspective and sensitivity be translated into a kinaesthetic experience?
What are the performance tools of the interpreter/improviser?
Through a series of exercises sourced both from improvisational and choreographic contexts, the dancer is called upon to investigate her/his performing choices and the possibilities that present themselves. As these options are investigated the artistic contribution of the performer in the creative process is examined.
Form comes as a play of chosen dramatic and dynamic tensions identified through the body and the body at play in space. From the simplicity of the butterfly effect, a holistic perspective, to the complexities of emotions and sentiments, a deep personal synthesis, we will look for the dynamic expression
of these occurences in their abstract, clear, sensitive forms.
"Boivin, in particular, enlivened the space...In his long poses that are part of the choreography, he's never static, but waiting, listening...for him, the abstract is a dynamic place that speaks about and doesn't ignore human essence." - Kaija Pepper, Dance International
Marc Boivin began his dance career at Le Groupe de la Place Royale in Ottawa under the directorship of Peter Boneham (now Le Group Dance Lab).
In 1985 he joined Ginette Laurin and her newly-formed company O Vertigo Danse, touring extensively in festivals across Canada, the United States and Europe. Since 1991 he has worked as an independent dancer, performing in the company creations and/or the commissioned works of many choreographers, notably Louise Bedard, Sylvain Emard, Jean-Pierre Perreault, Catherine Tardif and Tedd Senmon Robinson. A teacher of technique and interpretation, he has been affiliated with LADMMI, a professional training program in Montreal since 1987 and regularly guest teaches in schools and companies across Canada. An avid improviser, Boivin has been researching and performing this form since 1992 more specifically with Andrew Harwood, Peter Bingham and Helen Walkley. He is the 1999 recipient of the Jacqueline Lemieux prize, awarded each year by the Canada Arts Council. More recent projects have included performances with Louise Lecavalier in her newest commission, Cobalt Rouge by Tedd Robinson, partnership with Karen Kain for the short feature film Elegie, and assistant to choreographer Sylvain Emard for Robert Lepage's staging of Lorin Maazel's opera 1984 at Covent Garden
ROH. High points of 2006 and 2007 include a participation in the performance dedicated to the work of James Kudelka by Montreal company of Coleman/Lemieux and the creation of the next improvisational event for Andrew Harwood's AH HA Productions expected in January 2007.

For further information and to register, contact the instructor Paul Persofsky at 416-533-4315. (Paul is a meditation instructor and actor.)
Free demonstration/discussion Monday Jan 15, 8:15 pm, Shambhala Meditation Centre, 670 Bloor St. W., 3rd floor, at Manning Ave. (www.shambhalatoronto.org <http://www.shambhalatoronto.org> )
About the workshop: Participants explore their own process of moving and sounding using the principles of sitting mindfulness meditation. Emphasis is placed on being present to thought, feeling, sensation and space and on allowing the body to move freely (or be still) in silence or with sound, beyond the thinking mind's control... This way of practising helps you relate to hesitation, explore habitual tendencies, develop patience and discover new possibilities of expression. It is awareness training, not a dance class.
Experienced dancers will find this work useful for developing choreography and power in performance. It fosters the ability to be more alive in transitions; more open to not knowing what comes next.

Dancemakers' Winter Choreographic Lab with Yvonne Ng Tony Chong
Dancemakers is pleased to welcome Toronto choreographer Yvonne Ng to its Winter Choreographic Lab.
In collaboration with Ottawa's Le Groupe Dance Lab, Dancemakers offers this exciting professional development opportunity to local dance artists who wish to spend a monitored and concentrated time dedicated to the creative process without the need for producing finished work.
Ng will have access to our exceptional company dancers for three weeks of uninterrupted playtime.
Two informal showings on February 9 and 16 at 7pm will allow her to gain invaluable feedback from audiences eager to participate in and gain a deeper understanding of the creative process.
The Dancemakers Lab has been lead for many years by Le Groupe's Artistic Director Peter Boneham, a recent Governor General's Award recipient for his lifetime contribution to the art form.
Due to the need for a more prolonged recovery period following a recent and successful operation, Boneham is unable to join us this year.
We wish him a speedy return to his energetic self!
In his stead, Le Groupe's Co-Artistic Director, Tony Chong, will act as Ng's outside eye.
We are thrilled to welcome Tony to Dancemakers and look forward to deepening our relationship to Le Groupe.
Chong will be offering morning classes for the professional community for two weeks only from February 5-16, 2007.

EROS, THANATOS THE AVANT-GARDE ~ THE CABARET SERIES
To be held on Wednesday February 20th at 8pm
The Rivoli, back room, (Queen and Spadina)
DANCE / FILM / PERFORMANCE / THEATRE
On Wednesday February 20th, I am proud to present the 8th installment of the highly successful Cabaret Series Eros, Thanatos the Avant-Garde at the Rivoli on Queen St. West.
The Eros Cabaret accepts work created in the disciplines of dance, film, music, theatre, spoken word and performance.
All work must be designed specifically for a small, intimate nightclub setting.
Artists are given an honorarium to perform.
The amount of the the honorarium is based on the number of tickets sold.
The mandate for the Eros cabaret is to create a warm, intimate performance environment for audience and performers alike.
The Cabaret offers a diversity of performance styles and mediums, all connected by the epic themes of sex, love, death, passion and the avant-garde.
In working with these ideas, I encourage performers to create works that are a brave departure from their normal performance stylistic.
Community building and audience development are also very important to the success of Eros.
For the audience, I endevour to present a rich variety of performance and film works with unexpected, eclectic elements.
While I fully expect that not all works will appeal to every audience member, I do expect that the audience will be interested, entertained and enthralled throughout.
For Submissions:
Please email a bio, brief CV and statement of intention to:

THRILL . the . World!!!
(If you want to forward this to other people you know, and you're sending it after Tuesday, please delete points numbered: 2, 3 4. Thanks!)
If you don't know about Thrill the World yet, you will very soon...
THRILL THE WORLD
October 13, 2007
In over 100 cities
On 6 continents
With thousands upon thousands of people dancing Michael Jackson's "Thriller"
For the largest world wide simultaneous dance performance
And the world's largest music video (re-make)
Raising over 500 million dollars for the Possibility Foundation (PF) (more information about the Possibility Foundation will be available soon online)
Thrill the World is for anyone who has ever seen the classic music video and said, "I wish I could do that!"
At Thrill Toronto, we taught mostly non-dancers the 5-minute choreography in 2 hours!
Thrill Toronto: set the first-ever Guinness World Record for "Largest Thriller Dance" on Oct. 29, 2006!
And you can see us on the Guinness World Records Day page at: http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/gwrday/ca_toronto_thriller.aspx
Thrill the World will be realized only through community.
I come to you now, to ask if you, or if someone you know, would be able to support us in the following tasks:
1. to design a "Thrill the World" logo
2. if you have a quality digital video camera and are available on Tuesday Jan. 9, 2007 from approx. 10 am - 4pm, or if we can borrow your camera during that time.
3. We need a make-up artist for Tuesday Jan. 9, 2007 (approx. 9 or 10 am - 4pm)
4. We need 2 assistants on Tuesday Jan. 9, 2007: to make sure that the choreography is done right, that the movements and speaking look good, general on-set assistants
5. We need some people who can manage an online site/ blog/ live journal/ other internet posting space on behalf of Thrill the World.
We'll send you the updates and photos and stuff, you just have to keep it updated.
Myspace facebook are taken care of. Everything else is up for grabs. It'll be likely a once-a-week update. Won't take too long once the page has been set up.
6. Do you speak another language?
We'll need translations for the postings we put up on the online community sites as well as the Michael Jackson fan club sites.
If you are willing to do the translation and/or manage a fan club on community site that is in ANY OTHER LANGUAGE, please let me know.
Or, if you know someone who would be able to.
7. THIS ONE IS IMPORTANT: are YOU or someone else you know excited about participating in Thrill the World in your city?!!!?
If being part of a worldwide simultaneous dance and worldwide music video is even a little bit interesting to you, we'd love hear from you!
We're putting together a giant list of people who are interested to send with our business plan to Michael Jackson's publicist (btw: he knows we did Thrill Toronto) and to our pitch for a corporate partner for Thrill the World.
The www.thrilltheworld.com website will be up and running soon.
Until then you can find videos, photos, and info about Thrill the World and Thrill Toronto on my website: www.inessens.com .
Links for Thrill Toronto event youtube videos are on the website.
If you have any questions about any of these requests, feel free to contact me.
Thank you for being a part of a dream coming true...
Yours in dance joy,
