Company Blonde has a unique and vital presence in the independent dance scene in Canada.
Since it’s inception in 1999 Company Blonde has been dedicated to creating dance works that are accessible to a vast audience of all ages blending comedy and theatre with classical modern dance. The artists of Company Blonde strive to tell stories and share experiences that speak to our community and our culture, while always keeping the audience at the forefront of their work.
In the creation and production of original work there is a strong emphasis on the collective. Choreographers, directors and musicians are encouraged to use Company Blonde as collaborators as well as interpreters. The members of the company are also choreographers and together have created many of the pieces in their repertoire. Company Blonde strives to build a diverse repertoire with work that can be performed on small stages, large performance venues, schools, bars, parks and pieces which can be easily toured.
Company Blonde also travels to schools giving workshops and teaching sections of their repertoire to students giving kids the opportunity to experiment with movement and theatre. These workshops are also designed to encourage kids to create their own dances and be open with what their idea of “dance” is.
In June 2000 Company Blonde produced Blonde Jokes a full evening of their own work at the Opera House. In October 2004 they produced Ruby Bastard at the Joseph Workman Theatre Project. They have performed in Dusk Dances in Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa. The Canada Dance Festival in Ottawa. Dancing on the Edge in Vancouver. The Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival in Guelph. Kick up your Heels and T.O Twang at Toronto’s Harbourfront. ABDC Dancemakers presents, among other festivals and events. They have worked with Julia Aplin, Shannon Cooney, Jenn Goodwin, Serge Bennathan, Michael Sean Marye, Learie McNichols, and Dean Gilmour. Their first short film Strum, the Burger Joint was directed by Will Pascoe.
